Louis Prima's Angelina was released in 1973. Featuring his backing band, Sam Butera & The Witnesses, the album delivers a lively and entertaining collection of some of Prima's most enduring songs, including "Baciagaloop", "Please No Squeeza Da Banana", "Mari Yootch", "Che La Luna", "Mama", and "Josephina."

George Coleman's resume is the stuff of legend. He cut his jazz teeth alongside some giants of the art form, joining Max Roach's ensemble in the 1950s, the Miles Davis Quintet, along with the bands of Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker and Elvin Jones. Mention must also be made of his work as a leader, which has inspired literally generations of saxophonists. Even with such an all-inclusive career, Coleman is still full of surprises and here on his new recording he gives his audience something they've never heard from him before - his first recording backed by a string orchestra. If you're into jazz history, you know this kind of project has some serious roots. Think Charlie Parker's "With Strings," or Stan Getz's "Focus"-albums where sax players let their lyrical side shine through lush orchestral arrangements. Coleman Hawkins did it. Ben Webster, too. When this album came out in 1995, it was an incredible breath of oxygen that penetrated the lungs of jazz, until then asphyxiated by young wolves, or let's say young clones, who were competing to see who could best imitate McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans or Herbie Hancock... This album by Ahmad Jamal, a legendary pianist if ever there was one, is perhaps his greatest album of the decade... After two disappointing albums released by Telarc in the early '90s (here and here...), here he is with a project that's downright exciting and worthy of his talent. Jamal has a new lease on life. Surrounded by a rhythm section he knows very well (his friends James Cammack, Jamil Nasser and Idris Muhammad are all part of the project), and with the exception of Israel Crosby and Vernell Fournier, Jamal has never felt more at ease than with these three. He also reunites with Manolo Badrena on percussion and George Coleman, an unfortunately little-known tenor saxophonist with an impressive track record (from Max Roach to Chet Baker and Miles Davis). Jamal's style is percussive piano, incredible finesse and suppleness of play, and an unheard-of sense of revival and dynamics. In short, if this pianist is unavoidable, it's also because he's a sacred monster with his own identifiable "sound", right from the very first bars. You won't soon forget him... One of the highest profile names in black American music, the iconic Nina Simone is worthy of all the praise that has been showered on her across the past six-and-a-bit decades. Released in 1999 by the noted audiophile label Chesky Records, The Feeling's Back showed that flugelhorn maestro Chuck Mangione - renowned for his trademark fedora hat and warm melodic lyricism - was still a force to be reckoned with in the jazz world. The son of an Italian American greengrocer, Rochester-born Mangione played hardbop in a group with his piano-playing brother before going solo in the mid-1960s. In 1978, he joined a small list of chart-busting elite jazz instrumentalists when his track 'Feels So Good' rose to No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Considered a founding father of smooth jazz, Mangione began his own record label in the late '80s before landing at Chesky in 1999 for The Feeling's Back, the first of two albums for the company. Framing his mellow flugelhorn sound with lush, intimate arrangements and female vocals, TheFeeling's Back showed that the flugelhornist hadn't lost his mojo. At 58, he could still play with the sensitive touch and quiet fire that had defined his earlier, commercially successful work. The album is reissued on SACD Hybrid Stereo in 2025

On Four Freedoms, trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas convenes a remarkable new quartet including the brilliantly inventive pianist Marta Warelis, propulsive bassist Nick Dunston, and the wildly swinging Joey Baron on drums. Douglas channels President Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1941 "Four Freedoms" speech - freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear - into a compelling new musical project. The ensemble serves as an analogy for a functioning society: four distinct voices coexisting, conversing, and creating through improvisation. Recording in January 30, 1955 and March 29, 1955 at Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey, this album features one of the great trumpet stylists in the world of modern jazz, Kenny Dorham and some of the major names in hard bop plus some latin musicians to bring out the Afro-Cuban elements. The presence of Carlos "Potato" Valdes on congas and the trombonist Jay Jay Johnson with Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Cecil Payne on baritone saxophone, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Oscar Pettiford, and drummer Art Blakey makes it must-have for all jazz lovers. It was among the earlier jazz albums merging Latin rhythms with hard bop: for it's time (mid-1950s), that kind of fusion was still relatively fresh in the jazz world. All musicians playing strongly, which gives the album high musical heft.
