The award-winning performances of Dutch pianist Nikola Meeuwsen, who claimed First Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2025, are captured on this live recording. His artistic maturity is revealed in Mendelssohn's deeply felt Variations sérieuses, Liszt's visionary and impassioned Dante Sonata, and the imaginative Etudes of Ana Sokolovic. The programme is completed by Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 9 "Jenamy" with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie under Vahan Mardirossian. These recordings capture the clarity, imagination, and expressive freedom that mark Meeuwsen as one of the most compelling voices of his generation.

This new album by the Yekaterinburg Philharmonic Choir presents Alfred Schnittke's Three Sacred Hymns and his Concerto for Choir, a setting of poems by Grigor Narekatsi (St. Gregory of Narek). Andrei Petrenko, the artistic director of the ensemble, says: "The Concerto is a unique choral canvas that blends musical layers of great profundity. The piece helps it's listeners and performers to transcend their earthly existence and to explore the sublime realms that Narekatsi and Schnittke have revealed. It is an embodiment of spirituality and possesses an endless array of meanings that can only be understood through it's sacred text."

This album pays tribute to composer Benjamin Britten, who will be commemorated in 2026, the 50th anniversary of his death. It was conceived by conductor Lawrence Foster who, with Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, showcases the British composer's impressionism tinged with post-Romanticism. The programme includes his sublime Illuminations, based on Rimbaud's poem, often performed by tenors but originally created by a soprano in 1940. Here, the young and very promising French soprano Julie Roset is the soloist, giving a very engaging performance. Another famous piece by Britten, Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, commissioned by the British Ministry of Education in 1945, is a set of variations on a theme by Purcell that showcases each family of instruments in the orchestra. Although the Sinfonia da requiem (1940) was commissioned by the Japanese government to celebrate the 2600th anniversary of the Mikado dynasty, Britten dedicated it to the memory of his parents. Finally, the Choral dances from Gloriana are taken from the opera-tribute to the Queen of England, who was crowned six days before the premiere on 8 June 1953.

Winter - from First Frost to Carnival Festivity A sparkling musical panorama of winter - harking back to the legendary Great Frost of 1708/09. This is an album of what might best be described as nicely funky classical and tango music of the 20th Century, performed by chamber clarinet ensembles.

Following the example of his distant 'great uncle' Felix, Arnold Mendelssohn (1853-1933) was a highly regarded composer, particularly in the field of Protestant sacred music, in which his famous relative had already distinguished himself. In contrast, his serious interest in the classical-romantic instrumental genres only began during the First World War, as if the composer wanted to reassure himself of tradition before all of the old structures collapsed. He was already approaching seventy when he wrote his violin concerto and, immediately afterwards, the second of his three symphonies-two witty masquerades whose broad spectrum between expressive meditation and a cheerful finale offers plenty of room for reminiscence, but not imitation. Mendelssohn juggles with symbols of the past but is never at their mercy. He masters them with ease.

Curiosa is conceived as a personal "cabinet of curiosities" by violinist Jorge Jiménez, bringing together music that entered his life through years of travel, collaboration, and discovery. The album spans laments, dances, preludes, fugues, and songs from both renowned and anonymous sources, ranging from the Middle Ages to the Baroque and beyond. Each piece is selected for it's emotional depth, strangeness, and expressive power, forming a living repertoire shaped in rehearsals, late-night conversations, concerts, and recording sessions. Central to the project is Jiménez's fascination with unaccompanied music and historical instruments, particularly the baroque violin and vielle, whose raw and earthy sound transports the listener into earlier sound worlds. Throughout Curiosa, Jiménez weaves together personal heritage, musical memory, and imaginative storytelling. His own arrangements connect Bach, Dowland, Strozzi, Gaspar Sanz, and traditional tunes with vivid images. Joined by Joy Smith on early harps and Daniel Garay on historical percussion, and performing with his ensemble Tercia Realidad, Jiménez blends historical insight with spontaneity and improvisation. The result is an album that feels both intimate and expansive-music passed "between hands, ears, and hearts," constantly transforming while remaining deeply rooted in shared curiosity and human connection. They form a living repertoire shaped in rehearsal rooms, late-night conversations, recording sessions, and concerts."

Composer, flautist, and producer Allison Loggins-Hull's genre-defying style is vibrantly brought to life on Patchwork, an album of six new chamber works celebrating the culmination of her three seasons as a Composing Fellow with the Cleveland Orchestra.

For Joseph Haas (1879-1960), meeting Max Reger, whom he followed to Leipzig, was a life-changing experience. He soon began to enjoy success as a composer, which led to his appointment as a teacher of composition at the conservatory in Stuttgart in 1911 and to the Academy of Music in Munich in 1921. The second episode contains a representative selection of Joseph Haas' piano works, which convey the diversity and uniqueness of his compositional style. Pianist Gerit Mense more than does justice to Joseph Haas' work with her colorful, emphatic playing!

The distinguished Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt, long associated with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra as a regular guest, conducted Johannes Brahms' Variations in B-flat major on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, Op. 56a, in concerts on February 13 and 14, 2014 in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz. This new BR-KLASSIK CD presents not only the live recording of this compelling interpretation but also a live orchestral rehearsal recording from February 10, 2014. The latter forms part of BR-KLASSIK's acclaimed series Conductors at Rehearsal, offering a glimpse into their artistic work with the orchestra. Brahms composed the Variations on a Theme by Haydn in Tutzing during the summer of 1873. The work was premiered on November 2, 1873 in Vienna, conducted by the composer himself. A short while later, Brahms introduced an alternative version for two pianos (Op. 56b), which premiered in 1874, also in Vienna. The Variations are based on the melody of the so-called "Chorale St. Antoni, " taken from the second movement of a Divertimento in B flat major (Hob. II:46) that was most likely mistakenly attributed to Joseph Haydn. The chorale may not even have been written by the composer of the Divertimento and could originally have been a pilgrimage song honouring St. Anthony of Padua in western Hungary (present-day Burgenland). Regardless of their origins, Brahms' Variations (theme with nine variations and finale) stand as one of the composer's most important and most celebrated orchestral works, and remain a cornerstone of the Romantic repertoire. The detailed rehearsal recordings on the CD provide a deeper insight into this magnificent work. Listeners can experience first-hand how the conductor's wishes, ideas and instructions are implemented, how his explanations and his temperament change the resulting sound, and what thoughts lie behind the interpretation of the work. Thanks to this series, which is now also available on CD, the unique artistic partnership between Herbert Blomstedt and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra can be documented. Blomstedt's seemingly inexhaustible source of energy - music itself - is palpable in every word and every bar. ? During the darkest of the lockdowns, I took my daughter to an open field near our home. In a time when the world felt shuttered and small, walking was our only escape from the suffocating stillness. As we reached the field, a sudden sensation washed over me-a quiet awakening. It wasn't just the spring breeze or the scent of the grass; it was a sudden reminder of what being alive meant. I felt I had been touched by Zephyr, the Greek god of the west wind, sparking a renewed wish to create and perform for the world once more. Liberte´: A piece exploring and searching for emotional freedom. Zephyr: Named after the gentle west wind, this track served as the primary source of inspiration for the entire album. Fushigi no Kuni: Translating to "Wonderland" in Japanese, this piece was inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland written by Lewis Carroll. A Troubadour in the Moonlight: A composition and improvisation depicting a minstrel serenading a loved one beneath the moon. For Misato: A heartfelt dedication to Misato-san, my dear friend who departed too young. The five songs above are composed by Yukari. Eurus, Suibokuga, Pandora's Box, Don't Follow the Piper, and Au crépuscule are collective improvisations.

Like gazing into a kaleidoscope, this double-CD album brings a treasure-trove of musical miniatures tracing the sweeping panorama and historic perspective of 10 centuries. A mirage-like journey through 1000 years - from the 11th Century until present day - introduces evanescent encounters with a dizzying array of epochs, genres and styles: from otherworldly chants half-whispered beyond ancient monastery walls, to the traditions of Indian Raga, Bulgarian folk tunes and Mongolian throat-singing, to rustic bagpipes and medieval troubadours, to the Baroque splendor of Bach, Handel and Rameau, to Mozart and Schubert, to Italian and French opera, flamenco and tango, jazz and blues, Stravinsky and Shostakovich, Piazzolla, Duke Ellington, Erroll Garner and David Bowie. This charismatic retrospective is a fascinating collection, brimming with world-premiere recordings (50 out of 51 tracks) and presenting a stunning variety of compositions - some original, some arranged by the performing artists - violinist Elmira Darvarova (first and to date still only ever, woman-concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra) and hornist Howard Wall (a former long-time member of two of the world's greatest orchestras - the New York Philharmonic, and the Philadelphia Orchestra). 17 nations from 5 continents are represented, including by ten women composers (one of whom composed operas in the 17th C. and had her works performed for the likes of Galileo). The meticulous album notes cover the multi-dimensional, serendipitous and cross-pollinating nature of essential events and legacies, which endure and continue to fascinate and transport us.

Among the few recordings of Don Carlo, this recording stands out with great authority. Despite being a live performance, it is of the highest quality. It's importance lies above all in the participation of two great performers, Franco Corelli and Gundula Janowitz, who have never recorded Don Carlo in the studio.

Hillborg: Orchestral and Concertante Works, Vol. 1

This program, dedicated to the melodies of Ernest Chausson (1855-1899), celebrates the music of this worthy representative of the French mélodie style. Cyril ACHARD (guitar and adaptations) and Kevin Norwood (vocals), two musicians with diverse influences (jazz, classical, early music, etc.), share a predilection for musical expression in it's purest and most unadorned form. Their passion for the beautiful melodies and harmonic soaring characteristic of this bygone musical movement led them to pay tribute to the most enigmatic and misunderstood of all "melodists." As jazz musicians who practice improvisation and readily engage in reinterpretation, they find this program an ideal playground. The unique character of this duo is based on a work of adaptation, even "reinvention" in places, interspersed with improvised sections, allowing the listener to oscillate between two musical universes. Nostalgie du Ciel offers a unique take on the composer's melodies through this original arrangement for guitar and vocals. The album, recorded in an Alpine church, strives to recreate the natural acoustics of the setting, allowing the listener to perceive the sound as it was generated at the source.

The CD delves into the technique known as diminution, which flourished for several decades toward the end of the 16th century, primarily in Italy. As Peter Söderberg explains in the liner notes: "Diminution consists of subdividing the long note values of a vocal model into short ones in a solo instrumental part, laying the foundation for virtuosic ornamentation. Diminutions on a solo instrument were often performed in conjunction with the vocal piece, performed by an ensemble of singers or instrumentalists (colla parte). But the vocal model-usually a chanson, madrigal, or motet-could also be adapted for a solo instrument that allowed for polyphonic playing, usually a keyboard instrument or, as in this recording, a lute."

In 1938 the Moravian-born Hugo Kauder (1888-1972) became one of the many Jewish musicians forced to flee Vienna into exile in the United States. Kauder's music reflects his Viennese heritage, with his generous output of chamber music in particular continuing the tradition of Brahms, not least in it's depth of feeling and dignity of manner. These four sonatas, early works balancing youthful passion and mature emotion, launch a series intended to recover the work of a composer who himself might fairly be classed as another Viennese master.

The recording, entrusted to award-winning pianist Massimiliano Génot (who previously spearheaded the rediscovery of composers Federico Bufaletti [tc 860290] and Giuseppe Unia [tc 812101]), focuses on the romantic piano sonata in nineteenth-century Italy. The theme is particularly interesting because 19th-century Italian piano compositions remain largely unknown today, partly due to the overwhelming preponderance of opera and theatre music of the time, which already overshadowed any other musical genre. Massimiliano Génot's passionate interpretation does justice to these important compositions, which deserve careful consideration within the European piano landscape of the time. The compositions of Giuseppe Unia, Carlo Rossaro, and Alessandro Longo represent a wide-ranging synthesis of Italian tradition and influences from beyond the Alps, in which solid compositional technique and typically Italian expressiveness blend in a manner that is both natural and masterful.

Exquisite music between late Romanticism and Impressionism, which [...] definitely deserves to be heard." There is not much to add to the words of the reviewer who reported on the first part of these complete recordings for klassik-heute. Leopold van der Pals, the son of Danish-Dutch parents, grew up in Russia and spent his life searching for higher truths. His inspirations-Goethe the scientist and his spiritual successor Rudolf Steiner-and his own experiences led him to ever-new explorations of the possibilities of infinite metamorphosis to an all-encompassing state of being. The current release concludes his cycle of string quartets. A bonus track-the melodious, distinctive quintet for flute and strings, where the composer renounces all virtuoso pretensions in a particularly appealing way.

If you happen to come to Frankfurt, especially in the first half of winter, please let me know. I would also come, either inviting Muhlfeld or bringing a viola part - for two clarinet sonatas that I would like Mrs. Schumann to hear. The unpretentious pieces would not disturb our comfort - but it would be nice! This is what the 61-year-old Johannes Brahms wrote to his friend, the violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim, on October 14, 1894. Even this brief note indicates the composer's early intention to have his two sonatas, Op. 120, performed alternatively by a wind instrument or the viola. Proving that these works are much more than 'unpretentious', Salzburg violinist and violist Thomas Albertus Irnberger, together with his long-standing piano partner Michael Korstick present a late new focus of Brahms's. The subsequent "Marchenbilder", Op. 113, by Robert Schumann mark another pinnacle of the viola-piano repertoire.

Following the first three CDs in the Bock reads Bruckner series, which were dedicated to the composer's period in Upper Austria, his existence as a perpetual bachelor on the lookout for a wife, and his veneration of Richard Wagner, this fourth of five readings with music now turns it's focus-again with a cast of readers-to the relationship between Bruckner and the sharp-tongued yet stylistically brilliant critic Eduard Hanslick. Through letters and reviews, it highlights how Hanslick's writings in the second half of the 19th century exerted a dominant influence on the entire Viennese musical world. However, six of his own songs, interwoven into the performance, also reveal him as a composer in his own right. In this fourth instalment of the series, Wolfgang Bock and Thomas Thieme, recitation, Elisabeth Wimmer, soprano, and Daniel Linton-France, piano, transport the audience into the fascinating world of Anton Bruckner in an incomparably authentic manner.

a·pe·ri·od·ic is a Chicago-based experimental music ensemble founded in 2010 and directed by Nomi Epstein, featuring post-Cagean notated experimental music. Their second release on New Focus features an album-length work by Magnus Granburg written for the ensemble, Aus der Nacht, von den Wehen, a forty-five-minute episodic work comprised of 71 distinct sections that explore subtle changes in attack, decay, resonance, and pitch, using an indeterminate notation to inject variability into it's performance.

Shostakovich's Sixth and Ninth Symphonies stand as sharply contrasting yet deeply connected reflections of a century scarred by violence, fear, and forced optimism. The Sixth Symphony, composed in 1939 at the height of Stalin's Great Terror, opens with a vast, searing Largo that unfolds like a requiem for a silenced society-mourning lost friends, broken lives, and collective suffering. It's bleak introspection is followed by movements of icy detachment and grotesque parody, where frantic energy and empty cheer mask a profound spiritual void. Through this unsettling trajectory, Shostakovich speaks with "secret freedom," revealing a truth that words could not safely express: a tragic meditation on human dignity under oppression. Written in 1945, the Ninth Symphony defies expectations of monumental victory music. Instead of triumphal bombast, Shostakovich offers a compact, ironic, and life-affirming work, brimming with wit, clarity, and subtle defiance. Beneath it's Haydnesque lightness and carnival spirit linger shadows of war, grief, and memory-solemn brass rituals, elegiac melodies, and moments of fragile reflection. In this recording, the Janácek Philharmonic Orchestra and Daniel Raiskin illuminate the symphonies' dual nature: tragedy entwined with irony, joy haunted by loss. Together, these works form a powerful portrait of resilience, humanity, and artistic truth in the face of history's darkest pressures.
