Listeners may find in Schubert's music a sense of unrequited longing that the Italian scholar Angela Carone called a "not yet" quality; this sense of "becoming" resounds throughout Schubert's 3 Klavierstuke. The six miniatures that eventually became known as Moments Musicaux suggest a range of moods and character sketches which Mendelssohn referred to as "songs without words," anticipating his own. Carlo Grante performs these works on a rare, meticulously preserved 1923 Bosendorfer Imperial. "Carlo Grante should be renamed Carlo Grande. Gaspard de la nuit, Maurice Ravel’s highly imagistic and structured musical masterpiece, is like a realistic dream, a lucid world of darkness and terror, evoked through refinement and detail. Ferruccio Busoni's Elegies (1908) and An die Jugend (1909) are experimental pieces that explore new pathways in the composer's harmonic language and artistic evolution. Elegies is an aesthetic manifesto, a wish for a turning point in the composer's creative evolution, but also, more ambitiously, in all future music. An die Jugend is a collection of four pieces written in 1909 which share some stylistic features with Busoni's first Elegy, while showing even further experimentation on the composer's part. Carlo Grante is one of Italy's foremost concert pianists. He has performed in such major venues as the Vienna Musikverein, the Berlin Philharmonie's Chamber Music Hall, London's Wigmore Hall and Barbican Hall, Rome's Santa Cecilia Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Dresden Semperoper, the Stuttgart Opera, Prague's Rudolfinum, as well as at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center in the US. He has appeared as soloist with major orchestras including the Dresden Staatskapelle, London's Royal Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony, Orchestra of St. Cecilia, MDR Leipzig, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and Concertino Wien. Grante performs these works on a B�sendorfer Imperial Grand Piano.

Since their Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1962, the Zaslav Duo (Bernard Zaslav, viola and Naomi Zaslav, piano) attained a high level of recognition for both concerts and recordings of the viola/piano repertory. In 2016, during what he knew might be the final days of his life, Bernard Zaslav (known to those close to him as Bernie) expressed that it had been his privilege to record such a vast and varied catalogue of classical and modern viola music over the course of his ninety-year life. But even then, he had one more treasury of recorded material that had never been released which he would be “tickled” to share with the public. This recording, a recital which took place on February 8, 1986 at Dinkelspeil Auditorium on the campus of Stanford University, is a labor of love, and serves as his final offering.

The first two volumes in this series -the only one ever recorded with the same pianist playing all works - met with high critical acclaim.
