Symphonic in scale and with great dramatic power, Rachmaninoff's Piano Sonata No. 1 in D minor is an underappreciated masterpiece, depicting a tremendous range of human emotions. The turbulent and brilliant Piano Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor is heard in the 1931 revised version which clarifies textures and streamlines the work, heightening it's emotional impact. The Isle of the Dead employs Georgy Kirkor's 1957 transcription which Boris Giltburg has revised significantly. Giltburg's authority in Rachmaninoff has been universally acknowledged, with his performances termed 'characterful, sensitive and technically dazzling' by BBC Music Magazine (Naxos 8.574528).

For all his technical ability and mastery of what is possible on the piano, Boris Giltburg is not a merciless technician, but a pianist who immerses himself in the music.

In the two Rachmaninoff sonatas, Giltburg draws us into a music that takes off without harshness, almost floating, and clearly tending toward Scriabin. The contrasts are made all the more exciting by the spontaneity of the playing, as are the magnificent, exciting melodic arcs with which he makes the piano sing.

The transcription of the symphonic poem ‘Isle of the Dead’ is also very successful, because Giltburg and Kirkur have obviously felt the dark and demonic secrets of this music very well. With his imaginative playing, Giltburg gives the piano a very active role, allowing it to act rather than merely reproduce impressions. The music of the Isle of the Dead shimmers in many colors and is full of dramatic power, full of life.

This album presents a diverse selection of world premieres commissioned by the award-winning guitarist, Gabriel Bianco, from composers who have lived and worked in his native Paris. These range from the swirling Spanish motifs in Matthieu Stefanelli's Ellipsis for four guitars, featuring the Quatuor eclisses, to Camille Pepin's hypnotic Autumn Rhythm and Thomas Viloteau's festive A Night in Bastille - just a few of the highlights in this programme of new guitar music from the City of Light.

Yasunori Imamura, whose recording of Bach's complete lute works has been described as a 'magnificent interpretation' (Naxos 8.573936-37), turns his attention to the Cello Suites. Imamura has chosen to perform these iconic suites on the theorbo, the most important plucked instrument in the lute family, with a range very similar to the cello. Certain technical elements, such as the playing of arpeggios are, in fact, easier on the theorbo whose unique timbres and resonances bring a new sonic quality to these much-loved works.

Flanked on this recording by the Missa brevis in G major, the only example of a 'Pastoral' Mass by Mozart, and the emotive Missa brevis in F major, the precocious Mass in C major was composed at the age of only 13. It is a dramatic setting of sizeable proportions, with the Gloria and Credo themselves the length of a Missa brevis setting. The 'Dominicus' Mass shows a deepening of Mozart's contrapuntal and harmonic language, with more adventurous and memorable melodies for the soloists.

A native of Ukraine, Alexey Shor now lives and works in New York. His music has received prestigious performances and recordings in collaboration with leading international musicians. Joining a long tradition of music inspired by literary sources, From My Bookshelf is a series of musical character portraits that range from the tortured soul of Quasimodo to the dashing D'Artagnan, with plenty of fantasy and romance in between. The engaging and virtuoso Flute Concerto No. 1 combines traditional Classical forms with unexpected harmonic language and intricate rhythmic vitality.

The Mexican-American composer, Juan Trigos, has developed the concept of 'abstract folklore', a process by which he assimilates various literary and musical traditions in his method of composition. This first volume of his guitar works shows the process in all it's breadth, not least in the large-scale Twelve Variations and Fugue on the Folia de Espana, where old-world dances meet syncopated new-world rhythms. The Partita, based on the principle of variation, also evokes and alludes to dance, while the virtuosic and expressive Ricercare de Camara VII ingeniously explores the fusion of guitar and percussion.

Ferdinand Ries occupies a remarkable place in the history of music. He was famously a friend and pupil of Beethoven and a virtuoso pianist. His extensive oeuvre opened up the musical aesthetics of Viennese Classicism to Romanticism. Completed in 1826, the Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 143 features two lively, fast movements surrounding a poetic Adagio, reminiscent of the era's finest opera arias. Very different is the Grand Trio in F minor, WoO 86. It features four thematically interwoven movements that traverse emotions from despair to passion and eventual peace.

Notker Balbulus, also known as Notker of St Gall or Notker the Stammerer, was a renowned Benedictine monk at the Abbey of St Gall in Switzerland who made substantial contributions to both the music and literature of his time. These include the Liber ymnorum, which forms an important collection of early musical sequences that celebrate special moments in the liturgical calendar. As the 'very long melodies' of the liturgical sequences were a formidable challenge to memorise, Notker created these texts as an aid to holding the melodies within the mind and memory. They are performed here by the acclaimed and insightful Schola Antiqua of Chicago.

French music specialist, Jean-Luc Tingaud, conducts a selection of Faure's secular choral and theatrical music - works that remain relatively little known. Setting a text by Victor Hugo, Les Djinns is heard in Faure's version for choir and orchestra, while his first venture into incidental music, Caligula, focuses largely on the lives of the women in the Roman court rather than the Emperor. Featuring both instrumental and vocal movements, Masques et bergamasques evokes the Arcadian allure of the French f�te galante style - antique, luminous and nostalgic. Also included is the premiere recording of Desire-emile Inghelbrecht's inventive and sympathetic arrangement of Faure's largest piano work, the Theme et variations.

Ronaldo Miranda is a multi-award-winning Brazilian composer with works commissioned by leading artists and institutions. His music is regularly performed in prestigious venues in Brazil and around the world. Miranda's Piano Concerto is an exciting virtuoso blend of atonality alongside hints of Bartok, contrasting with the flowing scales and delicate patterns found in the Concertino. The prize-winning Horizontes is a symphonic poem that tells the story of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the New World, while Variacoes Temporais (Beethoven Revisitado) is an inventive set of variations on some of Beethoven's most famous motifs and themes.

Volume 65 in the Liszt Complete Piano Music series features works based on Hungarian themes, including the famous Rakoczi March, heard here in two contrasting versions. Pianist Christopher Williams has previously recorded Brahms and Mendelssohn for Naxos, as well as a series of Barmotin's piano music for Grand Piano.

The euphonium played a key part in the brass band movement of the mid-19th century due to it's playability, affordability and ease of mass production. The historical lack of original compositions for euphonium was made up for with a wide variety of transcriptions. Virtuoso embraces this heritage in a celebration of the instrument's unique depth and versatility. The renowned virtuoso, David Childs, is united with the legendary Black Dyke Band in a collection of classical and contemporary repertoire that ranges from much-loved traditional songs to dazzling showpieces.

The music of GRAMMY-nominated and Latin GRAMMY-winning composer, Roberto Sierra, is performed worldwide and has long been admired for it's confluence of Caribbean elements and inventive modernist language. The works on this album cover a decade's worth of composition and examine crucial concepts - the idea of time in music; creative new applications of sonata form with regard to mood, tempo and character; and evocations of images seen through Latin American eyes. Continuum, directed by Cheryl Seltzer and Joel Sachs, has enjoyed a 40-year friendship with Sierra, receiving dedications and premiering numerous of his compositions.

This recording showcases three new evocative works by GRAMMY Award-winning American composer Michael Daugherty, exploring the triumphs and tragedies of flight. Blue Electra is a dramatic violin concerto inspired by the sensational life and mysterious disappearance of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart in 1937. Last Dance at the Surf is a one-movement dance symphony for orchestra that reflects upon rock 'n roll legend Buddy Holly's final performance in 1959 at the Surf Ballroom in Iowa and his tragic death in a plane crash just hours after his show. To the New World for orchestra celebrates the triumphant Apollo 11 moon mission in 1969 and Neil Armstrong's historic moonwalk. Under the baton of GRAMMY Award-winning conductor David Alan Miller, the Albany Symphony is joined by GRAMMY Award-winning violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, who performs Blue Electra with electrifying musicality and emotion.

Alexey Shor was born in Ukraine but now lives in New York pursuing a distinguished career filled with prestigious performances and recordings in collaboration with leading international musicians. Childhood Memories traces a path from early childhood to adolescence in a nostalgic reflection on youth, while Verdiana is a musical tribute to Giuseppe Verdi that reworks his famous melodies into Latin dance styles including samba, bossa nova and tango. Both of these works feature Shor's trademark of melodic clarity and emotional depth.

Fazil Say's gifts as a ground-breaking pianist are allied to the breadth of his compositions. The Violin Concerto No. 2 was composed in the midst of the Covid-19 lockdown during which Say was enchanted by the colours and textures of sunrises while walking on the beach, inspiring this atmospheric work. Leopards is a vivid piece for string sextet that utilises Say's unique melodies and rhythms. The Sonata for Solo Violin is an expressive tribute to the noted Turkish violist, Rusen Gunes, while String Quartet 'Divorce' relates the experience of separation and the failure of a relationship with the language of music.

Domenico Scarlatti redefined the possibilities of keyboard music, blending the grandeur of the Baroque with the emerging vitality of the Classical era. He found his artistic sanctuary at the royal court of Portugal in the employ of Queen Maria Barbara, a pivotal role that generated a remarkable synthesis of Italian and Spanish musical traditions. The works included in this collection thoroughly explore the capabilities of both instrument and player, with thrilling inventiveness, dazzling virtuosity and beautiful lyricism, which encapsulate Scarlatti's legacy as a trailblazer in this genre.

Luis Humberto Salgado was one of Ecuador's most influential composers. His output encompasses nearly every genre of western European concert music, and seamlessly blends both nationalist and modernist styles. Most of these miniature pieces were inspired by the musical folklore of Salgado's home country, while works such as the Sanjuanito futurista and the Violin Sonata are more modernist. From the lullaby Aldita to the folk-dance infused Piano Quintet No. 2, these world premiere recordings reveal a vibrant and creative voice.

Goffredo Petrassi's reputation was established in 1932 when his Partita (available on Naxos 8.572411) won critical acclaim. Petrassi then composed his Concerto for Orchestra, the first of eight, which, upon it's 1935 premiere, secured his reputation outside of Italy. The Second Concerto from 1951 reveals more avante-garde tendencies, while the Third Concerto from 1952-53 is animated and playful.

The grandeur of Mozart's Missa solemnis in C minor 'Waisenhausmesse' caused Viennese scholars to doubt how it could have been composed by a twelve-year old boy. The Mass was written for the consecration of a new Orphanage Church in Vienna with an expanded orchestra, and it's premiere was conducted by Mozart himself 'to the general approbation and admiration of everyone'. Mozart often made use of the purity of C major in his Masses - the Missa brevis is a remarkable model of compactness, while the Missa solemnis is Mozart's last complete Mass.

By the age of 30 Erich Zeisl was considered one of Vienna's leading composers. His compositions included chamber works, choral and orchestral pieces, opera and ballet, and Lieder. His settings from Des Knaben Wunderhorn invariably evoke a Mahlerian lineage as Zeisl draws on imagery of light and dark, sunshine and death. In this volume his early songs are juxtaposed with his last, from 1938, a graphic setting of Komm susser Tod. In exile he wrote no more songs. After the Anschluss, which wrecked his career, Zeisl escaped to America where he endured frustration and ultimately rejection as a film composer at MGM. During this time he composed a piano anthology for his daughter, Barbara, in which he created charming miniatures tailored for the young learner.

Sergey Rachmaninoff's two Elegiac Trios became the pinnacle of Russian musical symbolism, forming an epigraph to the revolutionary upheavals that split Russian civilisation and Rachmaninoff's life in two. The moods of nostalgia and echoes of soulful longing found in these works are infused with ideas of death. The beautiful theme of the Trio elegiaque No. 1 in G minor transforms into a funeral march in the epilogue, while the complex Trio elegiaque No. 2 in D minor is a memorial to Tchaikovsky filled with powerfully prophetic symbols most notably the Dies irae motif.

Cesar Guerra-Peixe's compact First Symphony and the colourful Nonet date from his years as part of the M�sica Viva group - a collective of young composers influenced by Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, the German composer and teacher who brought serial techniques to Brazil. Guerra-Peixe's relationship with serial composition was intense and short-lived, but both of these earlier pieces were admired internationally and remain two of the finest works produced by this movement. From the 1950s onwards, Guerra-Peixe turned to musical nationalism with many successes including his award-winning and eloquently programmatic Second Symphony.

Mieczyslaw Weinberg flourished as a composer despite working amidst political and personal setbacks. He gained the admiration of Shostakovich, and was championed by the leading Soviet musicians of the day. The soulful Cello Concertino with it's Yiddish overtones and melodic eloquence was discovered posthumously, and is effectively a preliminary version of the more elaborate and intense Cello Concerto. The potent Romantic nature of the Concerto has made this one of Weinberg's most performed largescale pieces. The Fantasia is an appealing early work - expressive and spontaneous. The orchestral piece Polish Melodies, Op. 47, No. 2 recorded during the sessions for this album is available to download and stream (Naxos 9.70381).

Jia Daqun, one of China's most prolific and respected composers, has written in many forms, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music and song cycles. The symphonic four-concerto cycle, Impressions of Liyuan, is one of his major pieces. It is written for Chinese percussion, bamboo flute, the erhu and suona, with a large symphony orchestra. It offers an evocative aural landscape fusing Western styles with the traditional characteristics of Chinese opera, framed in a contemporary context.
