This selection of chamber music by leading Portuguese composer Pedro Faria Gomes was written between 2007 and 2018. The works encompass themes of memory, change and waiting, with the concept of time being a central preoccupation. Though he has drawn on music from his country's folk traditions - in Mem�ria and in the Sonata - it is always with new harmonic insights and subtlety, creating undeniably invigorating additions to contemporary chamber music repertoire.

The music of George Kontogiorgos generates a mystical soundworld inspired largely by the stories and creatures of Greek mythology. Although primarily tonal, his compositions encompass a broad spectrum of music from minimalism to atonality. Dancing with Centaurs contains melodic elements found in fragments of ancient Hellenic music and traditional songs from Asia Minor, interwoven with the pentatonic scale. Night Walk is redolent of the Hellenic mainland in it's structure and freely expressive performance, while the Concertino 'Testosterone' features novel sound effects including saxophone multiphonics.

Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto is the quintessential national virtuoso showpiece, but other Russian composers have contributed strongly to the genre of works for solo violin and orchestra. Tchaikovsky's student Taneyev, who rose to eminence in Moscow, wrote a memorable Suite de Concert that followed the model of the Baroque suite while infiltrating it with warm lyricism and brilliant variations. Earlier, Rimsky-Korsakov had written a Fantasia on Two Russian Themes that explored virtuoso potential in a concerto form that is both seductive and vibrant.

Fernando Lopes-Graca was arguably the greatest Portuguese composer of the second half of the 20th century. He absorbed successive stylistic influences, but the core of his musical impulses lay in the folk music of his native country, a feature especially evident in his songs. The originality and complexity of his harmonization, the vivid and communicative beauty of his sets of Christmas songs and the subtlety of his settings of Russian and Hungarian songs illustrate a complete mastery of this aspect of his multifaceted art. This is one in a small series of music by Fernando Lopes-Graca on Naxos. Benet Casablancas' distinguished career spans over four decades, his music prized for it's intensely individual harmonic palette, highly developed sense of dramatic and narrative form and, as with the chamber works on this recording, his tightly woven and intimately evocative statements both miniature and monumental. The playful, virtuosic energy of the Siete Haikus complements the shimmering Seis Glosas which are part meditation and part evocation, while the improvisatory Aria contrasts with the chamber concerto interactions of Pastoral, all performed by musicians from the versatile and sophisticated Ensemble New Babylon. Ensemble New Babylon's debut concert was in November 2012 under the patronage of the mayor of Bremen, with the aim of reintroducing contemporary music to the cultural life of the city, and since it's foundation it has performed over 40 world premieres. An integral part of the ensemble's concept is devising around specific themes and unusual performance spaces, and as a result it has received numerous awards from the Deutscher Musikrat for projects such as collaboration with funk group Watson's Mother in 2013, a 48 hour non-stop spectacle 'The show must go on' at the Theater Bremen in 2016 and a collaboration with TanzKollektivBremen at the Tanz Bremen International festival for contemporary dance in 2017.

Now in his creative maturity, the Catalan composer Benet Casablanca's has a growing interest in the sensuality of sound. Seven Scenes from Hamlet, one of his best-known works, is a theatrical mosaic of images inspired by Shakespeare' play. The Epigram.

Catalonian native Manuel Blancafort was largely self-taught as a composer. Taken under Frederic Mompou’s wing, he was introduced to the rich cultural life of 1920s Paris and became part of a fertile aesthetic revolution that rejected Romanticism and marked a revival of Classicism and beauty, his concise, intimate and playful spirit connected to that of Grieg, Faure and Satie. Always maintaining their Catalan roots, Blancafort’s songs evoke the past and dream of a country aspiring to become cultured and free from oppression. The clarity and simplicity of this message led one commentator to describe him as “the living synthesis of Catalan musical culture.” Several of these works are receiving here their world premiere recording.

One of China's leading contemporary composers, Jia Daqun has often drawn on the traditional music of his native country. Flavour of Bashu derives its themes from Sichuan opera with its astrigency, rhythmic uncertainty and distinctive piquancy. The Prospect of Coloured Desert is one of his best-loved works, composed for Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project. Counterpoint of Times is a chamber concerto of fascinating complexity, whilst the String Quartet has been enriched with folk tunes and vivid performing techniques. Constancio Hernaez is a central figure in contemporary music in his native city of Madrid, his work premiered by prestigious musicians across several continents. Vocal music makes up a significant part of his wide-ranging output, and this program contains his complete works for voice and piano in an extended series that pays homage to great Spanish poets. Hernaez's style closely echoes and communicates the chosen texts in multilayered tonal/modal settings. The result is an attractive journey through a variety of musical and poetic landscapes that call to mind a parade of figures from Spain's musical heritage, appearing in an eloquent and richly colored soundworld. These works are receiving here their world premiere recordings.

Alejandro Roman is one of Spain’s most eclectic and versatile composers. He has been influenced by jazz and popular music, and this disc charts many facets of his unique compositional style. The sonically alluring Diegesis incorporates melodic motifs from ancient Greece in a theatrical context. Trois Tableaux Francais owes its inspiration to Debussy and Impressionism, whilst Homenaje a Bartok uses a Hungarian scale in Roman’s tribute to another of his favorite composers. In its repetitive movement, the suite Zootropias evokes early cinematic devices. Trio Arbos was formed in 1996 in honor of the violinist, director and Spanish composer Enrique Fernandez Arbos (1863-1939), and currently comprises Cecilia Bercovich (violin and viola), Jose Miguel Gomez (cello) and Juan Carlos Garvayo (piano). It has established itself as one of Spain’s leading chamber ensembles. The trio’s repertoire ranges from the Classical and Romantic to the contemporary, with specially commissioned works forming a significant part of their programs. The Trio Arbos has appeared frequently in major concert halls and festivals in more than 30 countries and has recorded the complete Piano Trios by Joaquin Turina for Naxos, as well as several other albums of music by Spanish and Latin American composers on other labels. Since 2005 Trio Arbos has held a residence at the Reina Sofia Museum of Contemporary Art of Madrid. Their project Triple Zone has been recently lauded by the Ernst von Siemens Musiksiftung of Germany.
