Wagner: Famous Opera Scenes / Lugansky
HARMONIA MUNDI

Wagner's genius is often associated with his unique feeling for orchestration. Yet the transcriptions and paraphrases for piano solo recorded here lay bare the beauty and boldness of his harmonic language, with an evocative power unrivalled at the time. Nikolai Lugansky, at once narrator and virtuoso, immerses us in a world where the heroes of legend tell us - and with what loftiness of spirit! - of the torments and aspirations of humanity.

Gramophone:immense technical fluency... innate musical quality...exceptionally well-mannered performances...Lugansky's tone is beautifully rounded and unforced in all parts of the dynamic spectrum (a truly Russian prerogative) and passages of delicate filigree are spun off with a no less enviable elegance and lightness. Musicweb:The piano playing is truly outstanding, with the young Russian giving the sort of red-blooded readings that have one thinking of a young Richter, Gilels or from our own time, Kissin or Pletnev... This is altogether outstanding Soviet pianism

A Chopin recital dated 1985 by the extraordinarily gifted young Nikolai Lugansky. To the exclusion of the Nocturne, Op. 27/2 (1835), the works on this CD were written in the years between 1841 and 1847, the ‘George Sand chapter’ in the Chopin biography. "There has not been a genius deeper and richer in feelings and emotions than Chopin", writes George Sand in her Histoire de ma vie.
