Little Girl Blue, released in 1957, was Nina Simone's first studio recording ever. It was originally issued on the Bethlehem label and features the singer and pianist backed by bassist Jimmy Bond and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Many of the tracks from this LP would become true classics, among them her perennial version of "My Baby Just Cares For Me". This album introduced Nina not only as a brilliant singer, but also as a unique jazz pianist. She was a solid improviser and her reworking of such well-known standards as Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and Tadd Dameron's "Good Bait", besides being highly inventive, reveal her extensive classical music training. This 2LP set brings you the LP "Forbidden Fruit" & the LP "At Newport" by Nina Simone. "Gin House Blues" is later re-recorded in a more upbeat way. "Work Song", written by Oscar Brown, Jr. And Nat Adderley tells the story of a chain gang. The title song "Forbidden Fruit" is an humorous up-tempo take on Adam and Eve was part nursery rhyme, part call and response. Nina was supported by Al Shackman (piano), Chris White (Guitar), Bobby Hamilton (Bas) by both performances. "At Newport" is another fine Nina live show, starting off with blues and a stunning reading of "Porgy". She then uses her major spot at Newport jazz festival to show off her diversity going into folk, rhythmic jams and an instrumental version of "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" that is almost like a classical recital.

Nina Simone burst into the world with 1959's Little Girl Blue, and music would never be the same. For over five decades, Nina entertained, enthralled, and educated listeners across her extraordinary recording and performance career. After a triumphant concert at New York's Carnegie Hall in 1992, Nina was approached by Elektra A&R executive Michael Alago (whose previous work at the label included Tracy Chapman and Metallica). When asked if Nina was ready to record again, she replied, "Get me the money... then we can talk!" Modeled around two of Simone's favorites, Frank Sinatra's A Man Alone (The Words And Music Of Rod McKuen) and Billie Holidays' Lady In Satin-with the common element that both were recorded with full orchestral accompaniment, the sessions began. Backed by a 50-piece orchestra, Simone recorded the material that would comprise A Single Woman with producer Andre Fischer (Natalie Cole's then-husband and former drummer for the band Rufus.) The ten tracks chosen from the sessions were revelatory, weaving songs about love in the style only Nina Simone could conceive and deliver. Simone recorded more material during the sessions, including covers of Bob Dylan, Prince, The Beatles, and Bob Marley, pointing to a potential follow up, but-sadly, A Single Woman would be her final studio album before her passing in 2003. A Single Woman was reissued in 2006, adding seven of those performances left behind. Now, four more previously unissued recordings from those sessions have been added to create A Single Woman: The Complete Elektra Recordings-21 tracks on CD and double-LP. Newly remastered, this collection also contains new liner notes from the British Ambassador of Soul, David Nathan, outlining both the recording of the album, but also recounting his nearly three-decade relationship with Dr. Simone-beginning when he formed the UK Nina Simone Appreciation Society in 1965. The album features Simone on vocals, piano, and arrangements, supported by Rudy Stevenson on guitar, Lisle Atkinson on bass, and Bobby Hamilton on drums, with production by Hal Mooney, liner notes by Nat Shapiro, and photography by Mort Shuman.

With "I Put A Spell On You", Nina Simone released one of her most popular albums in 1965, which also contains some of her best-known songs. Her great version of the title track in particular caused a sensation at the time. While Screamin' Jay Hawkins had given the song an ironic touch in the original, Nina transformed it into a rousing love song. Another highlight is the Broadway number "Feeling Good", which Mary J. Blige sampled for her song "About You" in 2006. Nina Simone delighted her then rapidly growing French fan base with interpretations of three well-known chansons: "Tomorrow Is My Turn" ("L'amour c'est comme un jour") and "You've Got To Learn" ("Il faut savoir") by Charles Aznavour as well as "Ne Me Quitte Pas" by Jacques Brel.

At the Village Gate followed the enormous success of Nina Simone's first "live" LP, which she had recorded at Town Hall, in New York, on September 12, 1959. That same year, she had signed a contract with the New York-based label Colpix Records. She recorded her second album for them, The Amazing Nina Simone, which contained the original studio version of "Children Go Where I Send You, " also performed at the Village Gate. The two bonus performances that follow the eight on the original album are thought to be from the same Village Gate gig. They consist of the Israeli song "Vaynikehu" and "Sinnerman." Nina Simone was one of those controversial figures American pop music puts forward from time to time, with the notable exception that she started her controversy earlier in the 1960s than, say, Bob Dylan. To see this African- American woman get angry about the racial situation in her country, right there on stage, was a shock to people who'd come to hear her sing "I Loves You, Porgy." Not that she cared; she figured that it was the artists job to deliver the truth, and if the truth hurt, so be it. Of course, events wound up proving her right, but she never stopped being prickly about one thing or another. Grammy-nominated pianist Simone Dinnerstein's Undersong is the third of a trilogy of albums recorded since the pandemic began. On this program, Dinnerstein delves deeper into what it means to be alive during this time and the role of the artist. "All of the music on this album consists of musical forms that have a refrain. Glass, Schumann, Couperin and Satie constantly revisit the same material in these pieces, worrying at it, shifting it to different harmonies and into different rhythmic shapes. Working with this music in the fall of 2020 was a constant reminder that in my afternoon walk in Greenwood Cemetery, I was quite literally treading a familiar path every day, a path that nonetheless had changed almost imperceptibly every time I left the house. Undersong is an archaic term for a song with a refrain, and to me it also suggests a hidden text. Glass, Schumann, Couperin and Satie all seem to be attempting to find what they want to say through repetition, as though their constant change and recycling will focus the ear and the mind.
