Rare choral pieces by Taneyev_ Tchaikovsky's Student and follower

Yuri Alexandrovich Falik was born in Ukraine in 1936 and studied with Boris Arapov at the St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music. Legendary Russian ensemble the Taneyev Quartet present key works here released on CD for the first time. These works are from the 1970s and have stood the test of time.

New on CD, new repertoire from Leningrad studios

Yuri Falik (b. 1936) is still active as a composer and was a pupil of Boris Arapov. He was a gifted cellist but gave up that career to focus on composition. He is a professor of composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory (formerly Leningrad).

Shostakovich highly appreciated her music, and predicted her worldwide recognition. In his String Quartet No. 5 and in Suite on Words by Michelangelo (No. 9) he used the second theme from the finale of Trio for clarinet, violin, and piano by Ustvolskaya. He wrote in a letter to her, "it's not you that are under my influence, but I'm under yours."

Boris Arapov (1905-1992) was educated at the Leningrad Conservatory and went on to become the director of orchestration and composition there. He was an influential pedagogue. These two works are some of his more highly regarded.
