The Singapore Symphony and its music director Hans Graf present a recording of Józef Kozlowski’s Requiem, together with the Singapore Symphony Chorus & Youth Choir, as well as a quartet of outstanding soloists: Olga Peretyatko (soprano), Olesya Petrova (mezzo-soprano), Boris Stepanov (tenor) and Christoph Seidl (bass). The Requiem (1798) was commissioned to Kozlowski by the abdicated King Stanislaw of Poland, and can be perceived as a requiem not just for the monarch, but for the entire Polish nation, absorbed by the Russian state during the 1780s. Interestingly, the work was also heard during the funeral of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, in a different version with heavier orchestration and choruses for more drama. The current recording uses a new edition created by conductor Graf himself, realizing the intimate character of the original 1798 version. Composed just 7 years after Mozart’s famous Requiem, the work is rooted in Viennese Classicism, yet also adumbrates nineteenth-century developments, with a subtle Slavonic tinge. This revival is a gem to anyone interested in music from the early Romantic era.
Mozart+ is an exceptional selection of some of the most beautiful concert and opera arias by W.A. Mozart as well as discoveries of largely unknown arias from operas by Tommaso Traetta, Giovanni Paisiello and Vicente Martín y Soler, reflecting the exchange of musical ideas between Mozart and his contemporaries and getting these three composers out of Mozart's shadow. Olga Peretyatko chose arias from the well-known operas „Die Entführung aus dem Serail“, „Le nozze di Figaro“, "Don Giovanni" and „Clemenza di Tito“ by Mozart and combined these with arias from rather forgotten operas such as "Antigona" by Traetta, "Il barbiere di Siviglia" by Paisiello as well as "Il burbero di buon cuore" by Soler. The connection between Mozart and Soler becomes obvious, as the recording also includes two insertion arias (K582 and K583) by Mozart, which he had written for the revival of "Il burbero di buon cuore". Mozart+ is Peretyatko’s second collaboration with the Sinfonieorchester Basel and Ivor Bolton as the conductor, after the highly acclaimed recording “The Secret Fauré” (2018).
From Mozart to Rossini, from Bellini and Donizetti to Verdi, the soprano Olga Peretyatko has proven her versatility on the world's great opera stages and on studio recordings. Her Rossini recital was awarded an Echo Klassik Prize in 2016. Now she turns to the Russian repertoire with her fourth album for Sony Classical: Russian Light. Here the St Petersburg soprano sings opera arias by the leading Russian composers Mikhail Glinka, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Igor Stravinsky and Dmitri Shostakovich. Rounding off the programme is a selection of orchestral songs by Sergey Rachmaninoff, including the famously mellifluous Vocalise. She is accompanied on this, her first purely Russian album, by the Ural Philharmonic under the baton of Dmitry Liss.
