Mozart’s trilogy of operas composed to librettos by Lorenzo Da Ponte delight and entertain audiences with their combination of sublime music and their mix of humor, romance and drama.

Cosi Fan Tutte, also known as ‘the school for lovers,’ stars a cast of young rising stars, conducted by Semyon Bychkov, in this 2016 production playfully set in a theatre. Kasper Holten’s production of Don Giovanni reveals the inner turmoil of the eponymous antihero, sung by Mariusz Kwiecien.

Erwin Schrott, Miah Persson and Gerald Finley star in David McVicar’s production of Le nozze di Figaro, one of the world’s most beloved operas."Kwiecien’s eloquently sung Giovanni heads a strong cast. Particularly impressive is Malin Byström’s Donna Anna, whose moving Non mi dir is addressed not to Don Ottavio but first to her dead father (via his bust) and then to Giovanni himself. This live recording of Richard Wagner’s Der fliegende Hollander was made at the 2013 Beyreuth Fetival. Samuel Youn as the Dutchman is firmly centred, steady as a rock, and also displays a close engagement with the text. His German is sometimes rather suspect sounding to me - with my unidiomatic command of the language - as if he mangles both vowel sounds and consonants in places, but non-German-speakers will delight in the tonal variety he produces.

Christian Thielemann intends to stamp his authority on things, with a strongly romantic performance that makes very little concession to notions of early nineteenth century style. His approach pays rich dividends throughout in illuminating details of the score in a manner that the composer would surely have approved.

This is Hamlet’s dilemma, and the essence of Shakespeare’s most famous and arguably greatest work, given new life in operatic form in this original Glyndebourne commission. Katharina Wagner, the great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner, is currently director of the Bayreuth Festival, making this recording even more special.. Tristan und Isolde was first performed in 1865 and provided inspiration to many composers including Mahler, Strauss, Szymanowski and Berg.
