He plays all the repeats in No. 3, and manages to convince you that the exercise isn't as boring as it looks on paper. This in itself is a rare achievement. But Garcia has always been a characterful guitarist: his musical intelligence and perception are to be treasured in an age where bland fluency seems to carry off the major prizes in international competitions... . Too many players are so bogged down by fruitless attempts to produce 'authentic performances' that they miss the spirit of the music. Their playing is therefore inhibited and has three main annoying quirks at least. Firstly, they make far too much of ornamentation so that the essential mordents, trills and shakes are given such a dramatic exaggeration that they stand out like angry spots upon a blemished face. Mr Cuckston's ornamentation is beautifully incorporated into the natural flair of the music. Secondly, some players are afraid of lively speeds for the quicker movements ... I suspect it is because they do not have the requisite finger technique ... and so the music does not come to life. But, in these performances, it does. Thirdly, some players indulge in grinding rallentandos and, to make matters worse, hang on to cadences for an inordinate length of time so that if a cadence is crotchet, crotchet rest and crotchet at say allegro, which should take just over one second, it can take more than five times as long and has the nauseating aural effect like unto some servile servant apologising to his master, and most profusely, while backing out of his presence.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e Mr Cuckston does observe some rallentandos but there is not this excess, this ghastly self-indulgence and musical fetishes!\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e But here Handel comes alive and surely all music should be both vibrant and alive. Players can kill music for reasons I have already mentioned and no corpse is ever pleasant and it certainly cannot communicate.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The energy and reliability of these performances are exemplary. The F sharp Suite is beset with all sorts of problems but they are not revealed here. The F minor Suite has splendid fugue and, as I have said before, couldn't Handel write a good fugue untrammelled by academia which sometimes the fugues of the great J.S. Bach may be.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The shorter pieces are a delight particularly the Capriccio and more so when it is played with such panache as this. The Air and Variations were the subject of Brahms's great Variations on a Theme of Handel (do investigate the brilliant recording by Peter Katin on Athene (ATH CD 9)).\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e A thoroughly enjoyable disc beautifully played and well-recorded. And all players of Handel should note. Those songs earned him the nickname of \"the Swedish Schubert\"—but the link with Schubert is not only a superficial one of similitude: Lindblad's two symphonies (written in 1831 and 1855) show that he also inherited something of Schubert's symphonic manner, though probably without actually knowing much (or any?) of the music.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The first movement of No. 1 wrestles with a thematic fragment from Beethoven's Ninth, and reminiscences of Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Weber dart and weave through the textures here and elsewhere; Lindblad also shows himself to be particularly fond of the Beethovenian sforzato. The finale—which begins with a bright fugue—brings Lindblad closest to his slightly older contemporary Franz Berwald, especially when he uses the same driving rhythmic figures, stiffened by the trumpets, that Berwald so often deployed. The Second Symphony shows a quantum improvement in confidence: Right from the start of the Maestoso slow introduction of the first movement, there's a sense of power waiting to be released, confirmed by the energetic, optimistic sonata-allegro that follows, again with Berwaldian touches of color in an orchestration, which otherwise owes more to Beethoven and Mozart than anyone else. A dignified, though busy, Poco allegretto instead of slow movement (doubtless learned from Beethoven Seven) and a knockabout scherzo lead to a finale that shows Lindblad to have been following the progress of early Romanticism on the Continent—not that early by 1855, perhaps, but his sound world seems already to have been established by the time of the First Symphony. In its sheer buoyant, lively enthusiasm the closest relative of this Second Symphony of Lindblad's is Bizet's Symphony in C, written in exactly the same year—indeed, the two works sometimes sound uncannily alike, though it's almost 100% certain that Lindblad won't have been acquainted with the Bizet, which was completely unknown until its first performance in 1935 (just after it was discovered in Bizet's papers, bequeathed to the Paris Conservatoire by his wife's second husband).\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e A genuine discovery, this—constantly inventive music of considerable achievement, for which the South African conductor Gérard Korsten obtains performances of real distinction from his Swedish players. The sound isn't terribly polished, but who cares? The main thing is to put across the music in as lively and communicative manner as possible, and here they succeed admirably.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e Good, bright sound with plenty of depth. The last of the seasons, Winter, brings cold winds, the stamping of feet and chattering teeth. The slow movement shelters by the warmth of the fireside, while the rain falls outside, and the last movement of this eventful history shows people walking carefully on ice, slipping and falling and running in case the ice breaks.
