One minor snag is a confusion over numbering. Naxos calls its first selection of works Nos. 1-4, whereas in Gramophone and on the Gramophone Database the new numbering above is used. What many collectors will be concerned about is the Boccherini Cello Concerto beloved of generations in Grutzmacher’s corrupt edition. \u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e When many years ago I questioned Jacqueline du Pre about choosing it for her recording, she promptly justified herself, saying, ‘But the slow movement is so lovely.’ She was quite right, as her classic recording makes clear (EMI, 10\/67), but that movement was transferred from another work, in fact No. 7 in G, one of the four works here. Tim Hugh’s dedicated account of this lovely G minor movement is a high spot of this issue, with rapt, hushed playing not just from the soloist but also from the excellent Scottish Chamber Orchestra under Anthony Halstead. It develops into a long cadenza, a sustained meditation lasting almost two minutes out of the six-and-a-half, and I should have liked to have it identified in the notes.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e As it is, Hugh offers substantial cadenzas not just in the first movements of each work, but in slow movements and finales too, though none is as extended as the one in the G minor slow movement. Halstead, as a period specialist and a horn virtuoso as well as a conductor, matches his soloist in the dedication of these performances, clarifying textures (not least in the ripe horn parts, presumably played on natural instruments) and encouraging Hugh to choose speeds on the fast side, with easily flowing slow movements and outer movements which test the soloist’s virtuosity to the very limit, without sounding breathless.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The formula in all four works is similar, even though each has its individual delights, with strong, foursquare first movements, slow movements that sound rather Handelian and galloping finales in triple time. Not just for those who know only the old Grutzmacher concerto, all this will be a delightful discovery. That is not meant disparagingly: this is popular in the best sense, music easily accessible to untrained ears, yet good enough to be enjoyed by the most fastidious. Bonfá, Jobim, Almeida, Pernambuco, Baden-Powell and Machado fall into this category. They are well represented here. So is Isaias Savio, with a delightful Sonha laia, Seroros and the ever-popular Batucada... . The Preludes are given a good performance by Gerald Garcia. He plays all the repeats in No. 3, and manages to convince you that the exercise isn't as boring as it looks on paper. This in itself is a rare achievement. But Garcia has always been a characterful guitarist: his musical intelligence and perception are to be treasured in an age where bland fluency seems to carry off the major prizes in international competitions... . Garcia's own arrangements of three Brazilian children's songs are charming, and well worth a place... . Too many players are so bogged down by fruitless attempts to produce 'authentic performances' that they miss the spirit of the music. Their playing is therefore inhibited and has three main annoying quirks at least. Firstly, they make far too much of ornamentation so that the essential mordents, trills and shakes are given such a dramatic exaggeration that they stand out like angry spots upon a blemished face. Mr Cuckston's ornamentation is beautifully incorporated into the natural flair of the music. Secondly, some players are afraid of lively speeds for the quicker movements ... I suspect it is because they do not have the requisite finger technique ... and so the music does not come to life. But, in these performances, it does. Thirdly, some players indulge in grinding rallentandos and, to make matters worse, hang on to cadences for an inordinate length of time so that if a cadence is crotchet, crotchet rest and crotchet at say allegro, which should take just over one second, it can take more than five times as long and has the nauseating aural effect like unto some servile servant apologising to his master, and most profusely, while backing out of his presence.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e Mr Cuckston does observe some rallentandos but there is not this excess, this ghastly self-indulgence and musical fetishes!\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e But here Handel comes alive and surely all music should be both vibrant and alive. Players can kill music for reasons I have already mentioned and no corpse is ever pleasant and it certainly cannot communicate.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The energy and reliability of these performances are exemplary. The F sharp Suite is beset with all sorts of problems but they are not revealed here. The F minor Suite has splendid fugue and, as I have said before, couldn't Handel write a good fugue untrammelled by academia which sometimes the fugues of the great J.S. Bach may be.\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e The shorter pieces are a delight particularly the Capriccio and more so when it is played with such panache as this. The Air and Variations were the subject of Brahms's great Variations on a Theme of Handel (do investigate the brilliant recording by Peter Katin on Athene (ATH CD 9)).\u003cbr\u003e  \u003cbr\u003e A thoroughly enjoyable disc beautifully played and well-recorded. And all players of Handel should note.
