A world-premiere recording. Maestro Mikhail Pletnev conducts his own, never before published composition: the 14 Memoires musicales (2024). He set his childhood memories to music in 14 musical images that captivate the listener like a colorful kaleidoscope. Mikhail Pletnev's trumpet concerto is dedicated to trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov, who is also the soloist in this concert recording.

The Condon Collection, compiled by Australian musician and leading piano roll authority Denis Condon, documents major classical composers including Claude Debussy, George Gershwin and Sergei Rachmaninoff performing their famous piano works using a form of music storage and playback technology that predates modern recording techniques. Recorded between 1905 and 1933, and capturing every nuance of each individual performance, this extensive archive faithfully reproduces the playing styles and techniques of these legendary musicians and offers a unique opportunity to experience these rare performances and historical treasures first-hand, while also serving as a comprehensive archive of the reproducing piano's unique musical legacy.

The rich and colorful fruits of Lorin Maazel's first important orchestral tenure, with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra: repertoire from Bach to Stravinsky molded with the conductor's renowned finesse and attention to detail. Maazel took over the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin after the death of Ferenc Fricsay in 1963. He and the orchestra had already worked together extensively, both in concert and on record, ever since he made his Berlin debut with them in 1955. The DG albums of Falla, Franck and Stravinsky are all enduring examples of Maazel's art at it's most sonically brilliant and dynamic, cultivating performances of the greatest agility and contrasts of color from his players. For Philips, Maazel and the RSO Berlin recorded mostly Baroque-era repertoire in an intensive series of sessions shortly after the beginning of his tenure as music director in September 1965. The Philips engineers had found an acoustically optimal venue at a church in the Spandau suburb of Berlin, and they set down several major works by Bach as well as the Water and Fireworks Music of Handel and the Stabat Mater by Pergolesi, with a magnificent vocal duo in Evelyn Lear and Christa Ludwig. Even at the time, the symphonic grandeur of Maazel's interpretations was regarded as running counter to commonly accepted notions of Baroque style. But then, as he explained to an interviewer, 'We cannot recreate the outer circumstances that gave rise to artistic works of the past... What we can and should do is try as best we can to live up to their greatness in our own manner.' Maazel's manner is not so much old-fashioned as individualistic in it's contrasts of tempo, smoothly cultivated string sound and high-impact attacks: this is hi-fi spectacular Bach. The Philips series continued with symphonies by Mozart (Nos. 38-41) and Dvorak (No. 9), also raised to rare peaks of expressive intensity. These recordings have never been compiled before, and they shed fresh light on the spectacular early career of a prodigy of the baton. Original Cover artwork is complemented by archive photography and a new essay on Maazel's Berlin years by Peter Quantrill.

Nonesuch Records releases an album comprising the first recordings of Steve Reich's two latest works-Jacob's Ladder (2023) and Traveler's Prayer (2020) -on July 11, 2025. Jacob's Ladder, performed by the New York Philharmonic led by Jaap van Zweden with Synergy Vocals, was made during it's October 2023 world premiere at Lincoln Center's David Geffen Hall. The premiere recording of Traveler's Prayer, performed by Colin Currie Group and Synergy Vocals, was made at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, also in 2023. The two pieces were first released earlier this year as part of Steve Reich Collected Works, a twenty-seven-disc box set featuring music recorded during the composer's forty years on the label. Jacob's Ladder interprets, and draws text from, the Biblical book of Genesis, 28:12: And he dreamedAnd behold, a ladder set up on the EarthAnd it's top reached HeavenAnd behold, messengers of G-d ascending and descending on it. The composer explains, "Any melodic movement-up, down, or held-can find it's analogy on a ladder. Sometimes one only goes up a few rungs to reach something and then descends, or perhaps climbs higher, pauses, and then descends pausing at each rung on the way down. "There are four short sections-exposition, if you like-on each of the four lines of text then four longer sections elaborating on and developing those first four, " he continues. "What's particularly interesting to me in these much longer sections is that they are mostly instrumental music. The instrumental music interprets the movement of messenger/angels going up, down, or pausing on a ladder (or ladders) between heaven and earth: a musical interpretation without words. "Traveler's Prayer was composed before and during the 2020 pandemic. "The virus shifted the gravity of the words I was setting... three short excerpts from Genesis, Exodus and Psalms, " Reich says. "These excerpts are usually added to the full Traveler's Prayer found in Hebrew prayer books, " he continues. "While these verses can certainly apply to travels by air, car, or boat, they can also be applied to travel from this world to the next. "The first melody is from Biblical Hebrew chant in America and parts of Europe while the second is a more ornate style from Italy... The third melody I composed since, outside of Yemen, there is no existing tradition for chanting Psalms. As to structure, there are extremely free canons throughout.
