Commemorating the 150th anniversary of Maurice Ravel's birth, this special release features recordings of his work by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, originally captured in March 1964. For the first time, these analog-era recordings are being released on SHM-SACD single layer, utilizing a new DSD master produced in 2025 at Emil Berliner Studios from the original tapes. The album reproduces the original LP coupling and comes with a green-colored label coat, offering a chance to hear the masterful Berlin Philharmonic approach the essence of each Ravel work.

Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra made many highly praised recordings together. Corigliano's Symphony No. 1 is arguably one of the most significant recordings of his tenure; Barenboim's live world-premiere recording winning two Grammy Awards (Best Orchestral Performance and Best Contemporary Composition). His Erato recordings of the complete Brahms Symphonies and Beethoven's Missa solemnis are a milestone too of this era. Barenboim is also a celebrated Wagnerian, and his Teldec discs of overtures and preludes are frequently cited as the pinnacle of the CSO's "brass-and-silk" capabilities. Barenboim frequently collaborated with superstars like Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma to make outstanding albums: Brahms' Double Concerto with both; the Mendelssohn, Prokofiev No. 2 and Stravinsky with Perlman. He also recorded the Brahms and Sibelius concertos with the then-young superstar Maxim Vengerov. Critics at the time were stunned by the electrifying chemistry between the fiery Vengerov and the more seasoned, philosophical Barenboim.

There are few living pianists so well-known and with such legendary status as Evgeny Kissin. A former child prodigy, Kissin came to international attention in March 1984 when, at the age of twelve, he performed Chopin's Piano Concertos 1 & 2 with the Moscow State Philharmonic. Since then he has gone on to win countless prizes and plaudits. He now brings his considerable talents to Beethoven's five magnificent piano concertos, recording them for the first time as a complete cycle.

Polyphony and Stephen Layton present highlights from the choral repertoire by four twentieth-century American giants: Samuel Barber, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and Randall Thompson. Framed by Thompson's understated favorites Alleluia and Fare Well, the program includes Bernstein's Missa brevis, motets by Copland and - of course - Barber's inimitable Agnus Dei.

These magnificent recordings of the Ravel Piano Concertos have taken a far too long leave of absence from the Decca catalogue and are now back, with generous Faure and Franck couplings. Beautifully recorded sound too.

After a successful trilogy devoted to the concertos and trios of Schumann, Freiburger Barockorchester and Pablo Heras-Casado could not ignore one of Beethoven's most unusual works: the Triple Concerto. Alongside Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov, they bring this score to life as only true chamber musicians can, revealing it's subtlest colors and balances. The trio transcription of the Second Symphony, which was supervised by the composer himself, judiciously completes this exploration of lesser-known Beethoven, in which intimacy mingles with grandeur.

2020 release. Expressing his own cultural identity, guitarist Thibaut Garcia combines Rodrigo's archetypally Spanish Concierto de Aranjuez with a declaration of l'esprit fran�ais: Alexandre Tansman's neoclassical Musique de cour, inspired by the court of Louis XIV. Garcia's heritage is Spanish, but he is French, born in the city of Toulouse, where this album was recorded with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse and the young British conductor Ben Glassberg. It is completed by four solo pieces by Regino S�inz de la Maza, the guitarist who gave the premiere of the Concierto de Aranjuez in 1940.

Josef Suk began writing the funeral symphony Asrael to commemorate his teacher and father-in-law Antonín Dvořák. During the course of work, however, Fate dealt him another crushing blow: Asrael, the Angel of Death, took away Suk’s wife and Dvořák’s daughter Otilie. The symphony is a story of a suffering whose strength seems simply unendurable, yet also a story of its overcoming, seeking solace and hope. Sir Charles Mackerras’s live recording of Asrael originated on a Good Friday, 6 April 2007, one hundred years after the symphony’s premiere. The young Australian conductor had first heard about Asrael some sixty years previously from Suk’s close friend, Václav Talich. In later years, Mackerras confessed that he perceived the work in a completely different light after his daughter had died. Sir Charles conducted Suk’s Asrael during one of his last performances with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. It is also his last previously unreleased recording with this orchestra.
