Lorenzo Palomo has long established himself as one of Spain's greatest contemporary composers, and these three recent works reveal the vivid themes and colors of his music and the richness of his orchestration. 'Arabescos' evokes Spain's Moorish past in episodes linked together with rhapsodic freedom and fluidity, while 'Humoresca' features the double bass as it's protagonist in writing as witty as it is virtuosic. The extended choreographic poem 'Caribiana' is sensuously atmospheric and has a wealth of exuberant rhythms and melodies.

Joseph Marx's distinctive style is characterized in these songs by dazzling, colorful harmonies and a remarkable melodic richness that, coupled with his sensitive setting of the texts, results in some of the composer's finest works for voice and orchestra. Recurring themes of love and longing are encapsulated in one of Marx's earliest songs, 'Hat dich die Liebe beruhrt', and moods of cheerful serenity, profound earnestness and amusing operetta-like lightness are all explored elsewhere. This programme of premiere recordings includes the cycle Verklartes Jahr, a high point in Marx's vocal oeuvre, and the intoxicating expression of his love for Italy in 'Auf der Campagna.'

Paul Juon was in many respects a 'traveler between the worlds.' Not only geographically and culturally between East and West but also musically between Romanticism and Modernism. Perhaps it was Claus-Christian Schuster, the first pianist of Vienna's Altenberg Trio, who most successfully characterized Juon's music, which cannot be assigned to any school or trend, when he wrote: 'The shadow of homelessness falls on his works as well as on his life: not a Swiss, not a Russian, not a German; not a Romanticist, not a modern composer, not a folklorist - but yet a bit of all of them, and beyond that, in an engaging manner, a sincere and humanly impressive personality.'

The great bass-baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau has been involved with the music of Bach throughout his career. Even as a student, he studied the cantatas and in his first Post-War concert in 1947, he was a soloist in the "St. Matthew Passion." As the singer's career progressed, performances of the music of Bach and his contemporaries became increasingly rare. However, in the 1950s, while at the beginning of his career, Fischer-Dieskau produced a series of radio recordings featuring not only the music of Bach but other Baroque composers such as Schutz, Tunder and St. Elzel.

Although not blessed with a wide literature, numerous composers have written duets for violin and violoncello. The present collection of works by Hungarian composers not only provides both a wide overview, but above all else, many musical pleasures! Here two full blood-musicians Friedemann Eichhorn and Alexander Hulshoff have a knack for these musical partnerships.

In this album, his third for na�ve, Julien Martineau once again spotlights the mandolin: it's remarkable repertoire, nobility of character, and natural ability as a partner. Together with pianist Vanessa Benelli Mosell, he has devised a programme truly Beethovenian in it's inventiveness, honeycombed with influences and associations. Beethoven wears the crown, with four youthful pieces he wrote for this unusual duo combination, and the Allegretto of his Symphony No. 7 in a transcription by Hans Sitt. Gathered round his throne are those inspired by him - his contemporary Hummel, Romantic virtuoso Fritz Kreisler, and two composers of today: Walter Murphy, whose pop music arrangement realized by Bruno Fontaine brings in contrabassist Yann Dubost and percussionist Jos� Fillatreau; while Corentin Apparailly responds to Beethoven's Letter to the Immortal Beloved in a work specially commissioned for this album. Revisiting Beethoven in the light of later works composed under his influence enables the perfectly matched team of Julien Martineau and Vanessa Benelli Mosell to create a truly audacious, exciting homage, full of dynamic revelations of the unpublished, the un-expected, and the unknown. 'This programme brings together a lot of repertoire that is extremely virtuosic, but not at all showy,' says Martineau. 'Here there's no way to hide be-hind mere technical brilliance: this recording is above all a chamber music disc, a dialogue of equal voices.'

Founded in 1984 by the principal concertmaster and string section leaders of the Berlin Philharmonic, the quartet appears regularly at the world's most prestigious concert halls and annual international festivals. The ensemble's substantial Thorofon Classics label discography includes quartets by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Shostakovich, Reger, and now, Brahms complete string quartets.

An iconic release that launched a celebrated series of 'London Sound' recordings, this album assembles an unparalleled ensemble of 40 cellos from The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. David Vernier writes: "Who knows where the idea for this incredible recording came from, but be assured, you've never heard anything quite like it before. The sound of 40 topnotch cellists from four London orchestras performing Saint-Sa�ns's The Swan or Rachmaninoff's Vocalise is indescribable-but when you hear the rich, warm, reedy resonance, you won't forget it."

Louis Spohr's reputation as one of Germany's leading violinists was at it's height when he composed his Duets for Two Violins, Op. 39, and while it appears his intention was to finance an Italian concert tour with marketable duets, the publishers complained of their technical difficulty. Spohr defended this aspect by stating his 'desire to give my duets more inner value, more richness of harmony' than is usual in this genre. Indeed, a contemporary critic exclaimed that 'it is no exaggeration to say that the ideas and artistry required for these works would be sufficient... to create three concertos.'

Vasilije Mokranjac belonged to a prominent Serbian musical dynasty. His great musical gifts combine with an unassertive and introverted nature to create a unique catalogue of often incredibly virtuoso piano music, recorded here for the first time in it's entirety. From the first elegant Menuetto to the last Pr�lude written at the time of his tragic death, pianist Ratimir Martinovic finds Mokranjac's music 'exceptionally profound and spiritually uplifting.' Critically acclaimed pianist Ratimir Martinovic occupies a special status among artists of his generation. From his earliest days he has been uncompromisingly devoted to excellence in music performance, and has been formed into a mature artist of distinctive expression and profile. Born in Kotor, Montenegro, Martinovic studied under virtuoso Kemal Gekic at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad where he now serves as a professor of piano. He graduated in 1999, giving a recital where he performed Bach's Goldberg Variations, Beethoven's 'Hammerklavier' Sonata, Chopin's Four Ballades, and Prokofiev's Toccata in one night. He received his Master's degree in 2002, conducting and performing the works of Mozart and Haydn, with a full-length concert featuring works by Bach. He has performed at over 700 concerts with over 60 orchestras in prestigious international venues such as the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, Shanghai Oriental Art Center, the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Seoul Arts Center and the Moscow International House of Music. Martinovic is the founder and director of the KotorArt Festival in his hometown. Together with the Mokranjac family, Martinovic is the founder and president of the Vasilije Mokranjac Foundation in Belgrade

This album is one of a pair of distinctive Saint-Sa�ns recordings, made with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It features several rarely-recorded works, alongside the premiere recording of Saint-Sa�ns's arrangement for tenor and orchestra of the iconic Danse macabre - which was originally a song for voice and piano to a poem Henri Cazalis before it's expansion into a celebrated tone poem. Australian conductor Geoffrey Simon is resident in London and has appeared there with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Chamber Orchestra, and English Chamber Orchestra. Internationally he has appeared with the Adelaide, Atlanta, Israel, Moscow, and American Symphonies, among others. He is Music Director Emeritus of the Northwest Mahler Orchestra in Seattle, with which he has conducted the Mahler symphonic cycle and Messiaen's Turangalila Symphony. He is Consultant for Classical Special Projects for Arts Global, and has served as a jury member for Young Concert Artists, PianoTexas, Australian Cello Awards and Royal Over-Seas League.
