HILDEGARD KISS OF PEACE Sabine Lutzenberger (s); Baptiste Romain (vielle, lyra viol) CHRISTOPHORUS CHR 77376 (65:57 Text and Translation)

Sabine Lutzenberger participated in Sequentia’s recording of Hildegard’s music ( Fanfare 37:3) just days before making this solo collection. She and her accompanist in some of the selections are identified as the Per-Sonat ensemble, but to be fair he plays two pieces alone and improvises another track. She sings solo on two tracks and accompanies herself with handbells in two more. Two antiphons are sung with a Psalm as they were intended to be heard. The program is sung from the Dendermonde Codex, an earlier and less complete manuscript of Hildegard’s symphoniae than the Wiesbaden Codex, but it includes two unique pieces, one of which, Laus Trinitati , is included here.

In general, we have three types of Hildegard discs. A vocal ensemble with a more or less large instrumental band is often heard; a choir sings unaccompanied; or a solo voice is heard with or without accompaniment. The CDs I have often mingle these types of performance within one disc. Sabine is one of the best examples of a soloist who has, at most, a discreet accompaniment. She has a lovely voice and interprets the pieces intelligently. Her contribution to the recent Sequentia disc consisted of two tracks with the other women singers and one concluding track with several soloists, the ensemble singers, and the flutist. This disc shows her to better advantage. The concluding antiphon, O magne Pater, is a highlight of the program.
