Premiere release!

2011 marked the 60th anniversary of the Marlboro Music Festival. The Marlboro Recording Society has celebrated this milestone with a new series of memorable performances from the festival which have never before been issued.

The late Guarneri Quartet founding member David Soyer is the central artist for this program of chamber works by Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert. He is joined by acclaimed pianist Mitsuko Uchida in thrilling performances recorded at Persons Auditorium, Marlboro, Vermont.

Mitsuko Uchida appeared courtesy of Decca Music Group Limited.

"Mitsuko Uchida's presence in Beethoven's 'Archduke' Trio makes the performance a major occasion. Though not much different from the piece's extensive discography, it has a microscopic flexibility that allows the individual musicians, also including violinist Soovin Kim and cellist David Soyer, to make their own exclamations without interrupting the flow. The Mozart, Debussy, and Ravel works for string quartet and quintet ... exude a personality and ownership that make these performances singular, no matter how many other recordings you might have." – David Patrick Stearns, Sacramento Bee

"So the launch of a new series of recordings drawn from the festival’s vast archival treasures is welcome indeed; none of these live performances has hitherto been available commercially... [Cellist David] Soyer pushes the ensemble to elicit from [in K 593] a deeper sense of enigma. Their eager give-and-take eschews fussy, precious articulation in favor of a warm and full-bodied sound that’s truly engaging... But the real centerpiece of this offering is the Archduke Trio performed in 2006... All three players converge in a moment of tender and rhapsodic discovery that is like the lifting of a curtain. The shared epic on which they embark feels no less intensely adventurous for all its leisured byways and lyrical plenitude..." – Thomas May, The Classical Review

"Soyer was well into his eighties when the performances on this CD were recorded and his energy level, leadership and passion showed no sign of waning. David Soyer's spirit will live on at Marlboro, a special place where musicians live together, eat together, and breathe music together. That spirit is captured on this recording which is just one of the many treasures recently unearthed from Marlboro's musical archives." – Julie Amacher, Minnesota Public Radio
