Doug Raney Quintet
SteepleChase
Available as
Vinyl
This LP was originally released in the summer of 1989 with Doug Raney at age 33.
He released during his rather short life (1956 – 2016) 17 leader albums for SteepleChase including this 13th piano-less horn-featured recording which won accolades from critics all over the world.
“...Doug Raney is an elegant player even when he’s attacking, as he does here on most of the content .... Certainly recommended if you enjoy your jazz slightly in advance of bebop, but with all of that basic feel still there.” (Martin Richards on SCS 1249, Jazz Journal International)
“...no doubt, another in the string of successful Raney releases.” (Paul B. Matthews on SCS 1249, Cadence)

Pianist Joe Bonner (1948 – 2014) was born in Rocky Mount, North Carolina where Thelonious Monk was born about three decades earlier and left strong influence on the young pianist. An impressive modernist Joe Bonner performed in and around Denver, Colorado towards the end of his life and became a legendary figure. He spent considerable time in Denmark during the 80s. This album from Copenhagen in March 1987 is a studio recording with another American expatriate Bob Rockwell on tenor.
"...The Lost Melody is a good group session, marked by strong charts ...." (The Penguin Guide to JAZZ)
"... one cannot but admire the fluency and precision, the dexterous right hand...the diversity in his play is a mark of a great pianist..." (Jean-Paul Ricard, Diapason)

In 1964, the National Film Board of Canada asked John Coltrane to record the soundtrack for a French-language film titled Le Chat Dans Le Sac (The Cat in the Bag). In June of that year, Coltrane's classic quartet entered Rudy Van Gelder's studio and recorded five previously-recorded Coltrane originals. For many years, viewers of the film who recognized the music thought that they were listening to the original recordings, though in fact they were new and had never been heard.

A moody and evocative book of music passionately performed by the remarkable acoustic guitar trio of Julian Lage, Bill Frisell and Gyan Riley, whose previous CD for Tzadik Nove Cantici per Francesco d'Assisi was a Tzadik best seller. Inspired by anchoress Julian of Norwich, one of the founders of Christian mysticism, Virtue is marked by a stunning, seductive lyricism and a remarkable contrapuntal interplay by these three master guitarists. Softly spiritual music that is perfect for meditative late night listening alone or with a special friend.

2018 release. Jazz duo recordings can provide an exceedingly wide range of musical expression including but not limited to, profundity, humor, tenderness, introspection, exuberance and a whole host of others which can all change at the drop of a flatted-fifth. This type of mercurial interplay is on full display on this live gig from the Thatre Port-Royal in Montreal, Canada. Morgan and Cables played together frequently and their improvising is imbued with an almost telepathic communication. Cables' large piano tone is the perfect accompaniment to Morgan's slightly dry, Bird-like sound. At the same time, their spontaneity and sheer joy of music making succeeds in even making the chestnut "All the Things You Are" sound fresh and newly wrought.

The great bassist and composer Charles Mingus had his diehard supporters and detractors. His explosive intermingling of devil may care attitude, imposing character and aggressive music was sure to rub some listeners the wrong way and was just as likely to attract adventurous fans. But his genius could not be denied; it just may have taken some time to break down barriers. // A good way to examine this change in listener attitudes is to investigate the differences in critical appraisals from two performances in the port city of Bremen, Germany, a decade apart. The initial performance in 1964 introduced Mingus's firebrand ways to an unsuspecting audience while his 1975 appearance was met with the expectancy of jazz royalty. The performances appear in their first official release remastered from the original source tapes on Charles Mingus @ Bremen 1964 & 1975. // Both of Mingus's performances in Bremen are incredible marathons of brilliance from the top musicians of two decades. The performances don't show a wilting in the passion of the leader. A decade apart, the performances are every bit as cutting edge. The only thing that seems to have changed was the attitude of the critical mind, as ten years of achievement had cemented Mingus's legacy in Europe.

Sam Jones (1924 - 1981) was fondly called “Home” by all musicians who appreciated his rock solid, unwavering bass line they could always count on. This Jones’ first band since arriving in New York two decades ago features Japan’s super trumpeter Terumasa Hino and New York’s raising star tenor Bob Berg.
“SteepleChase is hard to beat when it comes to a consistently high level of jazz recordings and this latest album by Sam Jones is well up to standard....an excellent band. ...As for Sam Jones, he is in splendid form on all tracks, perhaps inspired by the feeling that he has managed to gather about him a cracking good band.” (Jazz Journal). 180g Audiophile Vinyl

It seems safe to say that Shirley Horn has now gained the popularity and recognition she deserves and that she joined the ranks of the star singers. And if you’ll excuse our boasting tone, SteepleChase takes a lot of pride in being the first record company to re-discover this great singer from the local scene of Washington D.C. to make her come-back to the major market possible.
As Nat Hentoff wrote in Modern Recording & Music in 1981, “..Miles Davis is not a notable enthusiast of singers, but one exception was Shirley Horn, a Washington-based improviser (on piano as well)...”,
Shirley Horn was a musicians’ musician little known to the wider public until her break-through in the late 80s.
Her appearance at the famous Dutch festival at the Northsea where this recording was made was the first live encounter with the European jazz crowd whom Shirley conquered with no sweat. 180g Audiophile Vinyl

Catalan pianist Vincente Tete Montoliu (b. March 28, 1933 in Barcelona) “swings like no other pianist in Europe”, once remarked Ben Webster.
Jazz Journal confirmed Ben’s opinion in reviewing this album, “...he could blow most contemporary pianists into the ground technically...”.
And Radio Free Jazz of USA (the predecessor of JazzTimes) concluded,
“...This is the best piano record in many years and one that will certainly rank with the best of any era.” 180g Audiophile Vinyl

In February of 1976 two of the bass playing giants: Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (1946 – 2005) and Sam Jones (1924 – 1981) went into a studio in Holland to record an album as co-leaders not to make an experimental project or a “battle” session but to produce “a unqualified success on all levels – musicianship, recording, feeling, integrity and compatibility,” to quate Mike Hennessy of Jazz Journal International.
Mr. Hennessy went on to say, “This is an intelligently conceived album. The tracks have been selected with great care – as have the tune treatments – to provide the maximum interest and variety.” 180g Audiophile Vinyl

This is the 11th album guitarist Doug Raney recorded for SteepleChase. Doug was born August 29, 1956 in New York. His father was the guitar legend Jimmy Raney. Doug died May 1, 2016 in Copenhagen, Denmark of heart failure at age 59.
The superb rapport between the fluid swing of Doug Raney’s guitar, which is often likened to the phrasing of saxophone players and the sharp and percussive piano of Ben Besiakov made this recording “eminently interesting.” (Jazz Magazine) “A very significant, excellent album!” (Jazz Hot)
