With the release of this title, Arkivmusic.com restores to commercial availability one of the most influential orchestra recordings ever made--the first release in RCA's legendary "Classic Film Score" LP series. After it appeared in the mid-'70s, George Lucas requested John Williams to use it as a model for the swashbuckling music he wanted in Star Wars, thus changing the course of movie scoring (and much for the better).

But it is not its history that makes this CD a mandatory item in any serious collection. It is the thrilling conducting and playing of Charles Gerhardt and the London free-lance musicians billed as the "National Philharmonic"; it is the hand of producer George Korngold (the composer's son) ensuring authenticity; and it is the ear of engineer Kenneth Wilkinson, achieving a lush yet clear Hollywood sound.

In 1989, personally supervising this remastering for CD, Gerhardt made the release even more important by restoring 20 minutes that had to be dropped from the LP. Listeners who do not have this program should consider it a mandatory acquisition. There are fine CDs that contain more music from most of the scores represented here, but as an overview of Korngold's illustrious cinema career, this release is unsurpassed.

THE LEGENDARY DUETS is the 1987 Bluebird CD reissue of 1962's THE NEWEST SOUND AROUND, which marked the debut of both avant-garde jazz singer Jeanne Lee and "third stream" pianist Ran Blake. It's a fascinating document--moody, dissonant, bluesy, and an altogether more musical affair than a related avant-garde entity such as Patty Waters's self-titled ESP debut. Of special interest are the slow, sure "Blue Monk" (with Abbey Lincoln lyrics) and a rare cover of the exotic novelty "Where Flamingos Fly," which bears comparison with the Helen Merrill/Gil Evans version on DREAM OF YOU.

This album is the result of two giant entertainers from the British Isles getting together in London in 1982 for a session of ballads and traditional pop. Dudley Moore was more famous, at least in the United States, for his comedic roles in a number of films. But he was a pianist and composer of no mean skills. Cleo Laine had been a singing talent of the first order since the 1950s and often performed and recorded with husband and sax player John Dankworth. Dankworth is present on one cut on this album. While Moore dashes off some nice solo work on such cuts as "When I Take My Sugar to Tea" and an Erroll Garner-like "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," it's Laine's wide-ranged, full-throated, expressive, and clear-as-a-mountain-lake voice that dominates the session. She sets the table for "I Don't Know Why I Just Do," recalling a few lines from "Love Me or Leave Me," and squeezes every ounce of feeling from "I'll Be Around." Then there's a fun, hip, overdubbed, scatting 1960 girl-singer rendition of "Before Love Went out of Style." The album's highlight track is a bluesy "Soft Shoe," where Dankworth chips in with his soprano sax and Laine and Moore engage in congenial patter. Moore's fellow rhythm section players are the inestimable Ray Brown and Nick Ceroli, which is the icing on a tasty musical cake that this album serves up.
