The Shostakovich cycle with Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow radio will be continued with two further episodes: the energetic fourth symphony and the enigmatic 15th symphony with the suite from the film music to "Five Day Five Nights" Op. 111. The Orchestra has premiered several works by Shostakovich, and Fedosseyev's career is closely linked to the works of the great Russian composer - the best conditions for an ideal interpretation. For nearly 40 years, Vladimir Fedoseyev has led the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio in the tradition of his predecessors. His interpretations are famous for their depth, artistic passion and great sensitivity for the national character of Russian music. Maestro Fedoseyev has created in the Orchestra a specific melodious emotional style that distinguishes it from others and has helped it to earn worldwide acclaim. Fedoseyev’s paternal attitude to the musicians of the Orchestra, his aspiration to make each of them a high level musician, has allowed many of the Orchestra’s musicians to perform as soloist, both with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra of Moscow Radio and other Russian and foreign symphony orchestras.

The program of the present album is based on the selection of pieces that Anja Kreuzer played at the 17th International Kuhlau Flute Competition. Anja Kreuzer is 1st prize winner of the International Kuhlau Flute Competition 2017 in the class for Flute solo. The Swiss musician studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with William Bennett, where she received her Master of Arts degree with distinction. She has been working with the Schleswig Holstein Symphony Orchestra and Theatre, Germany since 2015, where she plays in the position of associate Principal Flute.

Alfons Karl Zwicker is not a traditional avant-gardist who is absolutely devoted to parameters, noises and wiring. His method of composing is based on the sphere, the continuous new search for an integral lucidity of expression. He works with creative formation of associative sound spaces, which communicate powerful, moving moods and are often in an attractive contrast to one another. On this record Alain Pasquier and the Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain present his works Mirlitonnades and Erinnerungen im Ohr, which was especially composed for Pasquier. The Nouvel Ensemble Contemporain or NEC was created in 1994 in La Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland. It is currently composed of 20 permanent professional musicians from all over Switzerland, all curious, idealistic, and enthusiastic and showered with all manner of accolades and awards. It wishes to allow the multiple facets of 20th and 21st century music to be heard, encourage the blossoming of new talents by regularly ordering new creations and build bridges between different methods of expression.

As of 2023, most of the multitude of manuscripts documenting the extensive oeuvre of the Lucerne-born composer Franz Joseph Leonti Meyer von Schauensee are missing, if not lost forever. For this reason, there is no official catalogue of his works. His opera Die Engelbergische Talhochzeit (the Engelberg valley wedding) was reconstructed and edited by Hans Vogt and Hans Visscher van Gaasbeck in 1935. Acts one and two were performed as an incomplete work under the baton of Hans Vogt during the Swiss National Exhibition in Zurich in 1939. Sometime later, the third act was discovered in the music library of the Benedictine Abbey of St Andrew in Sarnen, following which Hans Vogt arranged the complete opera for a radio broadcast.

This arrangement was recorded under his direction on December 10, 1958, and broadcast for the first time by Radio Basel on April 5, 1959. The opera went on to be performed in various concert halls throughout German-speaking Switzerland. In 1974, Armin Brunner directed the opera at a studio in Zurich for a DRS television broadcast, though significant cuts were made in the recording. In 1982, Talhochzeit was performed by the Zurich Opera at Stadthof 11 (now Theater 11) in Zurich and subsequently on a tour of various Swiss venues.

Performances at the tradition-steeped Kantonsschule Obwalden grammar school in Sarnen in April 2015 (celebrating the 400-year history of the local abbey) and at the Kursaal hall of the Kempinski Palace hotel in Engelberg (marking the 200th anniversary of the accession of Engelberg to the canton of Obwalden) were the first since 1781 to feature the full composition with all its roles and complete text. The sole complete recording of the work is featured on this CD and so is released here for the first time. The bonus tracks on the second CD are likewise without precedent on disc.

Meyer von Schauensee composed a number of small-scale vocal works. The one presented here is titled Modetorheiten – eine Fastnachtsoperette (roughly: fashion fads – a Shrovetide operetta). This work lasts 30 minutes and seems to have been written for some occasion during the locally celebrated Shrovetide carnival of "Fastnacht”.

In the autumn of 1964 an opera company of the Teatro alla Scala di Milano gave guest performances for the first time in Moscow. Only having a short look at the cast list of the engaged artists illustrates the extraordinary requirements according to which the singers were picked for those prestigious guest performances: Fiorenza Cossotto, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Renata Scotto, Giulietta Simionato, Gabriella Tucci, Carlo Bergonzi, Piero Cappuccilli, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Rolando Panerai, Bruno Prevedi and Nicola Zaccaria. Under Herbert von Karajan's baton the performance of Messa da Requiem on September 25, 1964 with choir, soloists and the orchestra of La Scala became the most lasting success of this first trip to Russia. The exemplary quality of the choir, the four soloists and the orchestra were proven true.

This six-disc set of Tchaikovsky concert performances, recorded 1984-2009, features more than a dozen orchestral works, including the composer’s last three symphonies, the Manfred, The Tempest and other symphonic poems. Three of the recordings are first-time releases. The Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, founded 1930, is internationally recognized as one of Russia's most prestigious and versatile orchestras. Vladimir Fedoseyev has, since 1974, held the position of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the orchestra, now known as the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra.

The latest release of the label RELIEF is a recording done by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk of Lortzing‘s Die beiden Schützen (The Two Shooters) from the year 1951. With this work, which premiered in Leipzig in 1837, Lortzing was able to celebrate his final breakthrough as an opera composer. Even when listening to the first tracks, it is clear how outstanding the recording is. Especially the soloists, Ursula Richter and Heinrich Pflanzl, are, together with the Mitteldeutsches Rundfunkorchester under Herbert Haarth, the ideal interpreters of this comic opera in three acts. The Mitteldeutsches Rundfunkorchester was founded in January 1923 in Leipzig. Apart from their broadcasting pause during the Second World War, the ensemble has been the largest sound body and permanent representative of the Central German Broadcasting Corporation and the Leipzig Broadcasting Corporation since 1924.
