I always react to a two-disc Swan Lake with suspicion because you probably can’t squeeze the whole score onto two discs without making cuts and/or adopting breakneck speeds. Nicolae Moldoveanu’s solution is to make cuts—his tempos may be on the fast side of reasonable at times, but they are always plausible and his cuts are generally discreet ones (my score is based on the 1956 Soviet edition). This is not the Drigo edition; he does almost all of act I and, in act III, adds the Danse russe from Tchaikovsky’s original score (but not his original Black Swan Pas de deux ). Act IV is performed without cuts. In addition to being beautifully played and recorded, this is a “balletic” (it’s danceable) and dramatic performance, one of the very best to squeeze the ballet onto two discs.
