This is nonsense; Szell frequently commissioned works by young composers and championed music by Janacek, Hindemith, Bartók and Prokofiev. This recording, an entry in the Masterworks Heritage series, features Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra in Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra and Prokofiev's Symphony no. 5.
Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation and premiered in 1944. Szell leads a dazzling performance of this colorful work. The orchestra's soloists shine in the tricky second movement, while the mysterious elegy that comprises the third movement is brilliantly realized. Szell also brings true Hungarian spirit to the fiery finale, with the Cleveland Orchestra's brass playing grandiosely.
Prokofiev's Symphony was written towards the end of World War II and is considered by many to be one of his finest works. S. Bach: 18 Studies On "the Art Of Fugue"
With its fourteen fugues and four canons, all of which are derived from the same thematic germ cell, J. S. Bach’s "The Art of Fugue" contains within it a veritable cornucopia of constructional variants. In his own Studies, Reinhard Febel takes apart the constituent elements of Bach’s work and reassembles them in completely new ways, occasionally opening up the musical material and allowing it to range over the entire keyboard. With their refined and extremely complex “manipulations”, these Studies produce a brilliant and occasionally even dramatically expressive undertow. They were commissioned by the Duo Tal & Groethuysen, who have now recorded them for the present world-premiere release. In composing the fugues and canons that make up "The Art of Fugue", Bach was presumably thinking of the sound world of a keyboard instrument, although he never specified this unambiguously. As a result, this has legitimized a whole range of disparate versions for different combinations of instruments. Yaara Tal and Andreas Groethuysen – both of them well known as outstanding pianists – were drawn to the idea of interpreting the work as a piano duet. The term “study” stresses the idea of exploring and experimenting with different compositional possibilities and in that way finds its counterpart in Bach’s conception of the word “contrapunctus”. The Art of Fugue was not primarily intended for performance but was designed as a compendium of the possibilities of contrapuntal composition at a time when the golden age of this art already lay in the past. Yet Alban Berg was only one of many commentators to observe that a work regarded by many as based on pure mathematics has a uniquely profound musical depth to it. Bach maintains an impressive balance between academically abstract composition and the art of sensual expression. And the same is true for Febel’s Studies.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0614/3423/3066/files/3815592_1af26f93-0d6a-43c8-8fed-0614f62dac80.jpg?v=1778247456
jane-original-score-philip-glass-236758
Glass: Jane (Original Score)
REVIEW:

Set to a rich orchestral score, JANE the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall — a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists.

“Serengeti,” one of the score's most joyful cues, is a celebration of optimism, the piano rolls and the flute and horn section carrying it even higher. The Summer Night Concert was performed this year on September 18th 2020. It is an annual open-air event, which has been held since 2008. The previous series was the "Concert for Europe", which took place from 2004 until 2007. The park of Schnbrunn Palace in Vienna/Austria is the magical setting for the concert. The illustrious conductors who have previously led the orchestra at this event are Georges Prtre, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Mst, Valery Gergiev, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta, Semyon Bychkov and Gustavo Dudamel. Thanks to it's UNESCO World Heritage setting in the Baroque park of Schnbrunn with the palace as a backdrop, the Summer Night Concert adds great visual charm to it's superb musical quality. This event is classical music at it's very best. Millions of viewers and listeners in more than 80 countries can follow the concert online, on TV and radio. The Vienna Philharmonic's 2020 Summer Night Concert took place in unusual circumstances. After the coronavirus pandemic resulted in the longest enforced break in the orchestra's history, the concert planned for May 2020 had to be postponed until September and took place for the first time with a reduced audience. The Vienna Philharmonic devoted this very special concert to the theme of love. This is the fourth time that Valery Gergiev has conducted one of these concerts: he first appeared with the orchestra in 1997 and has conducted the Summer Night Concerts in 2007, 2011 and 2018. Valery Gergiev is a vivid representative of the St Petersburg conducting school. His debut at the Mariinsky (then Kirov) Theatre came in 1978 with Prokofiev's War and Peace. In 1988 Valery Gergiev was appointed Music Director of the Mariinsky Theatre, and in 1996 he became it's Artistic and General Director. He successfully collaborates with the world's great opera houses, works with the World Orchestra for Peace (which he has directed since 1997), the Philharmonic Orchestras of Berlin, Paris, Vienna, New York and Los Angeles, the Symphony Orchestras of Chicago, Cleveland, Boston and San Francisco, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (Amsterdam) and many other ensembles. From 1995 to 2008 Valery Gergiev was Principal Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic (of which he remains an honorary conductor to this day), and from 2007 to 2015 of the London Symphony Orchestra. Since autumn 2015 the maestro has headed the Munich Philharmonic. This year's programme featured the star tenor Jonas Kaufmann, who is appearing at one of these concerts for the very first time, even though he has been performing with the orchestra to great acclaim for the last two decades. Since his sensational dbut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in a performance of "La Traviata" in 2006, Jonas Kaufmann has numbered among the top stars on the operatic horizon. The international press has singled him out as the "new king of tenors". Insiders praise him as the most important German tenor since Fritz Wunderlich. Kaufmann is just as much in demand internationally in the Italian and French repertoires as he is in German opera. He has sung Massenet's Werther in Paris and Vienna, Cavaradossi in Puccini's "Tosca" in London, at the Met and La Scala. His intensive characterizations of Don Jos in Bizet's "Carmen" and Werther in Massenet's opera took opera fans throughout the world by storm. His solo albums are bestsellers only a few weeks after being released. In 2011 he was presented the coveted "Opera News Award" in New York. Shortly afterwards Kaufmann was named a "Chevalier de l'Ordre de l'Art et des Lettres" by French culture minister Frdric Mitterrand. Kaufmann has been selected several times as "Singer of the Year", by the classical music magazines "Opernwelt", "Diapason" and "Musical America" as well as by the juries of "Opus-Klassik" and the inaugural "International Opera Awards" (2013). The 177-year old tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic goes back to 1842, when Otto Nicolai conducted a Grand Concert with all members of the imperial "Hof-Operntheater". This event was originally called "Philharmonic Academy" and is regarded as the origin of the orchestra. Since it's founding, the orchestra has been managed by the administrative committee - a democratically elected body - and works with artistic, organisational and financial autonomy. All decisions are reached on a democratic basis during the general meeting of all members.
One of the most beloved, widely performed musicals of the last 25 years, Once on This Island introduced Broadway to the songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime, Seussical). The Vienna Philharmonic premiered four of Anton Bruckner’s nine symphonies, including No. 4 in 1881 and has enjoyed a unique relationship with the Austrian composer’s music since 1873. The Fourth was the first of Bruckner’s symphonies that Thielemann conducted. Half a century later Thielemann has come as close as possible to the ideal Bruckner sound with the Vienna Philharmonic: full-toned, warm, with registrations that are full of countless colours, clear without sounding harsh and well-contoured without seeming angular. Thielemann’s interpretations of Bruckner’s music are rooted on deep expertise and sympathy. Few conductors can match the solemnity and patience he finds in composer’s symphonies, or his ability to draw on the unparalleled beauty of the orchestra’s sound and the special acoustic of its home in Vienna, the Musikverein. That spark shone when Lisa was asked to cover "Dream a Little Dream of Me" for a Swedish documentary soundtrack. In the context of lockdowns, delayed shows and suspended projects, that little dream turned big, eventually giving birth to "Grand Songs". A covers album that is unprecedented in her discography, since she approaches modern pop songs, from the 1950's to our freshly unwrapped decade. It was an interest that he evinced not only as a choral conductor in Detmold, Hamburg and Vienna but also as a composer who bequeathed to posterity a vast number of secular and sacred choral works. Among his principal compositions for chorus and orchestra were not only his German Requiem but also his Song of Destiny op. 54 (1871) for mixed chorus and orchestra. This was arguably the most significant of all Romantic settings of a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin and has now been selected by the Berlin Radio Choir for a CD that explores the whole vast range of Brahms’s choral writing. Under the direction of Gijs Leenaars, the Choir – heard here in various formations – is joined in some of these works by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester of Berlin. The Drei Gesänge op. 42, for example, are scored for mixed unaccompanied chorus, while Nänie op. 82 was written for chorus and orchestra. “All of the pieces that are featured on this CD show how well Brahms was able to write for the human voice,” says Gijs Leenaars, “and this is true of both their compositional textures and the impact of the sonorities that he uses.” At the same time Leenaars notes that the present programme is an ideal showcase for the Choir’s versatility. The Choir, he goes on, is a “great vehicle for choral works with orchestra, in which the right balance between orchestra and voices is a challenge”, while in the a cappella repertory the singers impress with the delicate textures of their voices.

The texts that Brahms has set in this selection of pieces all raise existential questions about our lives as human beings. The Song of Destiny is taken from Hölderlin’s epistolary novel Hyperion and draws on the world of classical mythology, contrasting the carefree lives of the gods on Mount Olympus with the toilsome existence of mortals on earth. Nänie for chorus and orchestra was written in 1881 in memory of the painter Anselm Feuerbach, who had died the previous year. The motet “Warum ist das Licht gegeben dem Mühseligen?” (Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery?) op. 74 no. 1 revolves around the question of why an almighty God allows to us suffer. “Es tönt ein voller Harfenklang” (The sounds of a full-toned harp ring forth) comes from the Vier Gesänge op. 17, which Brahms wrote in 1860 for the women’s choir that he had founded in Hamburg the previous year. And the Geistliches Lied (Sacred Song) op. 30 for four-part mixed chorus and strings invites its listeners to be steadfast and take comfort in their faith in the face of suffering and death.

Fusing a modern-day pop sensibility with sleek and timeless jazz chops, singer, trumpeter and songwriter Bria Skonberg returns with her second album for OKeh Records, With a Twist. For his albums at Sony Classical he received great critical acclaim and was honored with several prices such as ECHO Klassik Award as „Instrumentalist of the Year“. His new album is a musical voyage of discovery to Versailles, to the court of the Sun King Louis XIV. Boldoczki has recorded flute and oboe concertos by French Baroque composers Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764), Michel Blavet (1700 - 1768), Jacques-Christophe Naudot (1690-1762) and Bonaventure Gilles (c. 1678-?) in arrangements for modern valve trumpet as well as for flugelhorn. "The tone colors and the virtuosity that results from the French style of ornamentation inspired me to capture the atmosphere at Versailles for the first time on a trumpet" says Gábor Boldoczki. "Unlike the natural trumpet that Baroque composers generally used at that time to conjure up images of heaven or of princely rulers, the modern valve trumpet and the flugelhorn make it possible to breathe new life into these highly melodic concertos through their brilliant, radiant and songlike sound". Boldoczki presents on his album also four movements arranged for trumpet and orchestra from François Couperin's (1668 - 1733) chamber music "Concerts Royaux" as well as a dance movement from the opera "Les Boréades" by Couperin's colleague Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 - 1764). On his album "Versailles" Boldoczki is accompanied by the Cappella Gabetta under the direction of the violinist and ensemble founder Andrés Gabetta.
This album was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Albmum.
THE LATIN ALBUM finds the venerable Boston Pops Orchestra entering the 21st century with high spirits and a bit of a retro feel, as they revisit material that was popular in their heyday with Arthur Fiedler, going back to the 1940s for a dreamy arrangement of 'Perfidia' and the infectious 'Mambo Jambo' of mambo king Perez Prado, while adding some more contemporary twists, such as the bittersweet 'Oblivion' of Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla. One a musician from the birthplace of jazz and the other immersed in European tradition, the two met in the autumn of 2019 at the legendary La Fabrique studio in the south of France long before the coronavirus outbreak. "Initially, we had very different ideas about how our shared session should unfold. However, we immediately knew that we wanted all theory to yield to a basic feeling," said multiple ECHO prize-winner and exceptional Grammy-nominated artist Brnner about how their collaboration worked in the studio. Of all pieces, it was the well-known jazz standard Basin Street Blues that ultimately delivered the breakthrough. A song from New Orleans - the cradle of freedom so bitterly fought for - gave them a clear view of their collaborative space. The result is at once profound and ambiguous in meaning: "To me, On Vacation is the soundtrack to dwell on and reflect." Technically brilliant, brimming over with a creative love for refined detail, and also exuding the greatest possible nonchalance, Brnner and James create richly imaginative, onomatopoeic music to ponder and dwell on, smile about and even cry over. In collaboration with fantastic musicians, including jazz drummer legends Harvey Mason and Wolfgang Haffner, they combine famous hits with mysteriously iridescent textures, weaving together colourful new interpretations and performing their own compositions too, all of which has the stuff of eternity. "These recordings definitely feel different from anything I've ever done before," says Brnner.
Pianist Simone Dinnerstein and singer-songwriter Tift Merritt join forces for the first time in Night, a unique collaboration merging classical, folk, and rock worlds, exploring common terrain and uncovering new musical landscapes.

Night features new songs written especially for the duo by Brad Mehldau (I Shall Weep at Night) and Patty Griffin (Night), as well as Tift Merritt's own songs (Only in Songs, Still Not Home, Colors, Feel of the World), and classical selections (an arrangement of Schubert's Night and Dreams, Bach's Prelude in B minor).
