It was a great day for Broadway when the New York Fire Department discovered violations in an uptown auditorium. The building was condemned and the tenants were forced to vacate, which meant that Jess Simple and all the warm, funny and foolish characters connected with Langston Hughes' comedy with music would have to find a new home. The new home was found on Broadway - the Playhouse - and Simply Heavenly opened there on August 20, 1957. Simply Heavenly is based on "Simple Takes a Wife" and other "Simple" Stories by the celebrated poet Langston Hughes. The action is concerned with Jess Simple, an honest, easy-going man trying to raise enough money to divorce a wife he does not love in order to marry his new love, Joyce Lane; his experiences with the neighborhood characters and his unsuccessful attempts to escape a woman who is bent on leading him astray. In short, Simply Heavenly is about many aspects of Harlem - its jazz, its humor and the universal problem of paying the rent and buying a shot of gin.

With the voices of Pearl Bailey, Milton Berle, Cyd Charisse, Annie Fargé, Gene Kelly, Liberace, Jayne Mansfield, Tony Martin, Phil Silvers, Loretta Young and Edie Adams, the score features music and lyrics by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen. 2016 action film Hardcore Henry pushes the boundaries of modern cinematography. The film, told from a first person perspective, follows the main character, Henry, who has just been brought back from the dead by his wife and is now a cyborg. After premiering at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, the film became one of the highest-profile films at the festival. It won the Grolsch People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award, and opened nationwide in April 2016. The soundtrack features tracks from The Sonics, Devendra Barnhart, The Temptations, as well as original songs composed for the movie by writer/director Illya Naishuller and her band, Biting Elbows.

The Crown returns for a second season to continue the telling of the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II's reign, as the fragile social order established after the Second World War breaks apart. The music in the first season conveyed a sense of awe and wonder. But Season Two hits a darker tone, reflected in a bigger and more menacing orchestral sound. Co-composer Lorne Balfe says that's because the characters have matured. "The queen is now a reigning monarch instead of a young girl given this position," Balfe says. Initially, the score involved an armory of analogue synths, sequences and heavily distorted double bass, and it worked well… but there was something missing, something unique that would become the very essence and signature of the series. John found it in the amazing vocal and songwriting talent of Eivør.EIVØR was born in the Faroe Islands. Her background and experience of performing across the Nordic and Scandinavian territories have shaped her unique and powerful musical talent. After John saw a video on YouTube of Eivør performing her signature recording “Trøllabundin,” which encompasses her incredible vocal range, throat singing and Nordic drum playing, he immediately realized how Eivør could be the integral part of The Last Kingdom’s sound. After an initial recording session in London, it became clear to the producers that what John and Eivør were creating was perfect for the series. Working as a team, John and Eivør have composed the score for all three seasons of the show so far, and their latest project harnesses the phenomenal sounds and mood of The Last Kingdom into one incredible album.As John and Eivør produced the music for each season of the show, they were both aware that the material being composed had much more to say, and could be taken to places beyond the TV screen. So, when Carnival Films proposed releasing the soundtrack, John and Eivør decided to create almost entirely new tracks. Sony Music announces the release of A DOG'S WAY HOME (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by Oscar�, Golden Globe� and Emmy� winning composer MYCHAEL DANNA - available everywhere January 11. Based on the book by W. Bruce Cameron and directed by Charles Martin Smith, "In the grand tradition of classic films, A Dog's Way Home inspired me to write a classic melody-driven score, performed by a Hollywood studio orchestra and the added colors of banjo, ukulele, guitar and piano. It is a moving experience to feel how an audience is unified in their connection with Bella. I loved taking this journey with her and telling her story with music," said composer Mychael Danna. A Dog's Way Home chronicles the heartwarming adventure of Bella, a dog who embarks on an epic 400-mile journey home after she is separated from her beloved human. The film stars Ashley Judd, Jonah Hauer-King, Edward James Olmos and Alexandra Shipp with Wes Studi and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Sony Music announces PLAYMOBIL: THE MOVIE (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK), with score music by GRAMMY� Award-winning composer HEITOR PEREIRA (Despicable Me, The Angry Birds Movie, Smallfoot) and songs from pop superstars MEGHAN TRAINOR and ADAM LAMBERT. Available from Sony Music Masterworks, the release follows last month's debut of Meghan Trainor's "Run Like the River," written by the pop songstress as part of her performance in the live-action/animated adventure comedy. Meghan lends her voice alongside a star-studded cast including Daniel Radcliffe, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, and Kenan Thompson, as well as multiplatinum-selling artist Adam Lambert, who also contributes an original song to the soundtrack entitled "Give The People What They Want." Directed by Lino DiSalvo and based on the best-selling children's play sets, Playmobil: The Movie makes it's theatrical debut on August 30th, 2019. Movie soundtracks have a responsibility to heighten the emotional value of the film itself. Barrington Pheloung achieves this in HILARY AND JACKIE. By including Jacqueline du Pré's performance of the Elgar Cello Concerto in its entirety, Pheloung not only pays tribute to du Pré, but allows the listener to get a sense of what she was about in a way the actors can't express. The synergy between du Pré and Barenboim is evident in every phrase, yet Jackie finally outshines even the orchestra. The Elgar was Jackie's piece, and no other recording comes close.
The other music on this disc is simple, yet poignant. Pheloung features the cello in his compositions, and Caroline Dale does an excellent job of being Jackie in her cello playing. Pheloung includes an arrangement of a song which the du Pré sisters sang as children, showing that he is not only a good composer, but is in touch with the material and emotion behind the film. The score is never excessive, and though sentimental at times, it seems appropriate to the tragic nature of this story.

Patrick Doyle began his career in film music writing scores for Kenneth Branagh's films -- but he didn't receive his first Oscar nomination until he wrote this one for Branagh's then-wife, Emma Thompson (whose magic touch with the Academy landed her almost annual nominations in the 1990s). Since then, Doyle seems to have joined the small group of score writers who get voted in year after year by the old boys' club that is the Academy's musical wing. However, this is not Doyle's best work -- most of it simply recycles melodic phrases from his previous stuff. Nonetheless, Sense and Sensibility has a pleasant romanticism in its orchestrations, and the vocal solos by renowned soprano Jane Eaglen are quite good. ~ Darryl Cater
