Sony Music announces the release of VENOM (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with original music by three-time GRAMMY Award nominee Ludwig Gransson (Black Panther, Fruitvale Station, Creed, Atlanta). Amongst an impressive resume of TV and film credits, Gransson is best known for his collaborative work with Donald Glover, producing records under the Childish Gambino pseudonym, including the critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY Award-winning album Awaken, My Love! One of Marvel's greatest and most complex characters takes center stage as Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) becomes the host for the alien symbiote Venom. As a journalist, Eddie has been trying to take down the notorious founder of the Life Foundation, genius Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) - and that obsession ruined his career and his relationship with his girlfriend, Anne Weying (Michelle Williams). Upon investigating one of Drake's experiments, the alien Venom merges with Eddie's body, and he suddenly has incredible new superpowers, as well as the chance to do just about whatever he wants. Twisted, dark, unpredictable, and fueled by rage, Venom leaves Eddie wrestling to control dangerous abilities that he also finds empowering and intoxicating. As Eddie and Venom need each other to get what they're looking for, they become more and more intertwined - where does Eddie end and Venom begin?"As a fan of the Venom comics - it was an intriguing challenge for me to write music for two incredibly explosive characters cohabiting one body," says Ludwig about the project. "The challenge was in creating two separate identities at the beginning of the story that could later be interwoven and coalesced. For the Venom score I drew on my roots as a metal guitar player. I set out to redefine metal by contemporizing it with current production techniques and infusing it with the super power of the orchestra."

WILLIAMS The Adventures of Tintin • John Williams, cond; Studio O • SONY 88697975882 (65:44)
After a three-year absence to the regret of symphonic film-music fans who are tired of gloomy synthesizer-driven scores, John Williams has forcefully reappeared with two large-scale orchestral scores for Steven Spielberg blockbusters. There were even rumors that the 80-year-old composer was retiring after The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse , but it has now been verified that at the very least he will be doing Spielberg’s mega production of Lincoln , due for release next Christmas. The prospect of Williams scoring an epic biography of Lincoln is enough to make his many fans drool. The Adventures of Tintin has already grossed more than $250 million overseas, and because of the popularity of Hergé’s stories in Europe, it seems as if it will be a rare example of an action adventure that makes more moncy there than in the United States. The solid Spielbergian story of redemption and self worth may not be popular these days with critics, but it will still sell tickets.
Tintin is first and foremost characterized by its nonstop pace and technical razzle-dazzle. The numerous action sequences give Williams plenty of opportunities for flashy music. No one in Hollywood now, with the possible exception of Michael Giacchino, could come up with this kind of score, and Giacchino has not yet shown that he can integrate so many melodies and variations in such a virtuosic fashion. The Main Title sequence is a jazz-inflected, self-contained instrumental tour de force in the style of Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal , but is better than both of them. It runs over memorably quirky visuals that could have been created by Saul Bass, and includes fleeting references to the Cantina Band music from Star Wars. Tintin is an orchestral showpiece on the level of Hook , but with more of a transparent chamber feel to it. There are shades of Harry Potter and sly references to the Imperial March from the Star Wars films and the main theme from The Fury . There are so many complex interactions with the copious thematic material that the relentless, animated, Indiana Jones-type action rarely degenerates into loud and repetitive note-spinning like the seemingly endless Desert Chase sequence from Raiders of the Lost Ark (that music works well in the picture, but not as a listening experience on the CD). Williams accomplishes all of this with a fairly standard orchestra, plus saxophones, accordion, guitar, piano, and harpsichord. The only negative for Williams fans will be that the score lacks an epic theme in the Star Wars-Superman-E.T mold. Some may also complain that it is more technically brilliant than lovable, but Williams’s music matches the visuals perfectly, as always. Beware the source cue where Renée Fleming sings an aria from Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet , climaxing with an explosion of shattered glass that is important to the plot but unlistenable on the CD.
The soundtrack recording contains all of the meaningful music in the film with spectacular and aggressive (but not harsh), closely miked sound. On a good system, the bass drum is stunning. With the Tintin score, you have to go with the (fast) flow. Williams hasn’t lost a beat. In fact, it sounds as if he thoroughly enjoyed doing this. Play the demonstration recording loud and marvel at what Williams can do with a large orchestra.

It was a great day for Broadway when the New York Fire Department discovered violations in an uptown auditorium. The building was condemned and the tenants were forced to vacate, which meant that Jess Simple and all the warm, funny and foolish characters connected with Langston Hughes' comedy with music would have to find a new home. The new home was found on Broadway - the Playhouse - and Simply Heavenly opened there on August 20, 1957. Simply Heavenly is based on "Simple Takes a Wife" and other "Simple" Stories by the celebrated poet Langston Hughes. The action is concerned with Jess Simple, an honest, easy-going man trying to raise enough money to divorce a wife he does not love in order to marry his new love, Joyce Lane; his experiences with the neighborhood characters and his unsuccessful attempts to escape a woman who is bent on leading him astray. In short, Simply Heavenly is about many aspects of Harlem - its jazz, its humor and the universal problem of paying the rent and buying a shot of gin.

Sony Music proudly announces the release of THE FOREIGNER (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with the music by Grammy® nominated composer Cliff Martinez (Drive, TV’s The Knick). “This is a unique score for me - my first time doing a score for a nonstop action film,” said Martinez. “Director Martin Campbell trusted me and left me alone to do what I do best. The music is all electronics with a couple of hardware synthesizers - it’s really dark and tense.” THE FOREIGNER, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, is a timely action thriller from director Martin Campbell, about a humble London businessman Quan (Jackie Chan), whose long-buried past erupts in a revenge-fueled vendetta when the only person left for him to love - his teenage daughter - is taken from him in a senseless act of politically-motivated terrorism. In his relentless search for the identity of the terrorists, Quan is forced into a cat-and-mouse conflict with a British government official (Pierce Brosnan), whose own past may hold clues to the identities of the elusive killers.Martinez added, “There’s a recurring theme in the film where Jackie [Chan] keeps wiping the floor with these young bodyguards and keeps saying, in essence, ‘I can’t believe you guys can’t handle an old man’. Original Score from the Television SeriesSeason 1 & 2Score composed by Dave PorterMadison Gate Records and Sony Classical proudly announce the release of “BETTER CALL SAUL (Original Score from the Television Series)”, featuring music by Dave Porter from seasons 1 and 2 of the critically acclaimed television series. Many people are already familiar with Porter’s incredible score for the award-winning television series BREAKING BAD. BETTER CALL SAUL is inspired by BREAKING BAD’s signature sound, but is completely unique and stands its own. With a more bluesy, funky and gritty vibe, Porter’s departure from his own source material is an homage, but gives BETTER CALL SAUL its own sound.“I’m excited to release my original score from the first two seasons of BETTER CALL SAUL, which see the re-introduction of two characters beloved by BREAKING BAD fans, “ said Dave Porter. “We get to meet Saul Goodman as Jimmy McGill long before his transformation to Saul and Mike Ehrmantraut long before he ever worked for Gus Fring. Completely remixed and remastered, the score is presented chronologically in order to follow their journey musically along with the show. Included are two pieces that I am most often asked about… the opening teaser from episode 208 and a new extended version of the BETTER CALL SAUL end credits — which is itself derived from a song we created with country artist Junior Brown as a promotion for the show’s debut in 2015.”
