This project answers Tommaso Rossi's proposal to follow up a mythological musical thread dedicated to the contralto recorder, starting from a composition "Tre Micro-meliche di Apollo and Marsia" I had written for him and violinist Daniele Colombo on the occasion of the 2008 Dissonanzen+Suona Francese Festival. The idea was to explore the timbric and technical possibilities of this instrument outside the more frequented baroque environment, by using up to date composition practices, some of which derived from electronic music. Over time, this idea transofmred itself into a larger, double track project in which the old and the new instruments, i.e. the recorder and the flute, are continuously invited to metamorphosize into one another.

“Praise of philosophy in the form of a Decalogue” is an opera-reading conceived by Rosario Diana with the aim - theorized since 2011 and later expounded in one of his books - to disseminate philosophical knowledge by means other than the customary ones (lessons, conference, essay, monographs). This work has been performed several times in public, at times preceded or followed by debates on the topics addressed by the text and by the work in its entirety. The score, which the two composers were commissioned to write, provides for an ensemble with a percussions section (vibraphone, bass drum and thundersheet) and a supply of resounding instruments and objects (spring drum, vibra-tone, maracas, wind chimes, stones struck again each other and chains shaken in clay jars). The music is the result of research that has above all delved into timbre, it interweaves with the text, enhancing its contents and internal dynamism, superimposing and intersecting the various levels of discourse, which entrusted to two different funcional components: that of the philosopher (who is onstage and soeaks imaginarily to a polis) and the vocalactors' section (to whom are assigned the philosophical and literary citations quoted in the libretto). Several renowned musicians and ensembles have come together to make this recording a reality, including Ensemble Interface, Quartetto Prometo, Lucio Miele, Ruben Mattia Santorsa, and others.

Modern music has emerged from a never ending struggle between characteristics from both the old and the new. While the old one fights to survive, the new one fights for its birth - this struggle for existence has been lasting for centuries. Rules are introduced, sometimes they become crystalized, sometimes they are rejected. As a result, music is like a living organism that is filtered and refined while being added to and improved as each era passes. This album is the result of my personal struggle between old and new, between past and future, for nowadays music is written by computers but musical rules remain the same as those written centuries ago. Since Vito Lo Re has always had an innate inclination to compose music associated with images, he often asks ''what is 35mm?''. It could be called a musical library of different moods and feelings, but even this definition would be especially limiting. Instead, he would argue that 35mm is his very heartfelt tribute to cinema and my declaration of love for the Seventh Art.

Daniele Ghisi’s poetics is clearly engaged in problematizing and, when possible, restating the necessity for a contemporary music able to inhabit the sound landscape of its time. A listening composer, Ghisi in no way opts for the importation of easy stylistic traits, he does not indulge in games of variation on kitsch, nor in consciously rhetorical pastiches. And yet, the surprising heterogeneousness of the materials is one of the first data that emerge from the approach of pieces like abroad, the longest and perhaps most important in this recording. The pieces on this album were written in very few years (2010-12) and raise the doubt whether this heterogeneousness deliberately not absorbed in the form is a compositional phase to go beyond or to be further developed. It is a question which the following pieces seek, discreetly, to answer.
