John Dowland was the most famous English lutenist composer and his considerable reputation during his lifetime extended across Europe as a result of his extensive travels and appointments at several continental courts. In the address "To the reader" in his song book A Pilgrimes Solace published in 1612 he recorded that "being I am now entered into the fiftieth year of mine age" which means he was born in or around 1563. By 1588, when he was twenty-five, he was already listed amongst English musicians worthy of honor in Dr. John Case's Apologia musices and was again listed as one of England's greatest musicians in Francis Meres Palladis Tamia of 1598, but had to wait until 1612 to gain the appointment in the English court that he so much desired. Paul Beier lives in Milan, Italy, and teaches lute at the Civica Scuola di Musica Claudio Abbado. Alongside his concert and teaching activity, he also studies and researches historical sources of the lute repertoire. His recordings have received prizes and awards in the specialized international press.

Plurimo tocar 'I first met vedova when I was eighteen. It was the beninning of a long journey with him, at times slow moving, at times fast and at time even subversive in the true sense of the word. Vedova lived in a warehouse studio at San Vio and at the age of sixteen had made some splendid drawings of great Venetian architecture through which he also in his own way laid bare historical reality as he pursued his development, typical of a completely self-taught artist.' This is how Luigi Nono recalled the beginnings of a friendship, joint interests and a project destined to endure and be renewed for ever. These roots also innervate and characterise the interior geography, the cleary distinguishable personality of Claudio Ambrosini. Of the four works featured on this record, composed from 1998 to 2015, Plurimo is offered as an explicit homage to the painter, a contant living presence in the composer's emotional and cognitive world because of their natural affinites.

In the course of the 18th century, and in almost all ofEurope, the lute, the main instrument of the 16th century, gradually decliption was for the German-speaking countries, where still, on the threshold of the 19th century, it was widespread in chamber ensembles and as a solo instrument. The outstanding figure in this late season was Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750), born in Grottkau, the Habsburg city today is known as Grodkow and situated in Poland. His first teacher was his father, Johann Jacob, a capable musician.

The focus of this album, consisting almost entirely of world premiere recordings on period instruments in modern times, is on Johann David Heinichen. La navigazione notturna is the “first fragment of a broader cosmology,” composed in Città di Castello in 1985, for the Sagra and the Tempio Malatestiani of Rimini. At the last moment that performance did not take place. The score was stopped at bar 85, but from that point onwards the work was planned in detail on graphic plots which indicated two parallel dimensions: one for the transformations of the sound elements (fast and complex agglomerates) with the other controlling the articulation of the physical acoustic space through the switching of sound agglomerates among instruments. Thus a four-part dialogue began to take shape. The part of the fragment that was not yet in the score has now been transcribed from those plots. The project envisaged the four instruments placed in a cross and the listening area in the center of the acoustic space. Due to the nature of this composition, it has not yet been recorded, making this the world premiere. Three other works by Sciarrino are featured as well: Due Arie marine, Il giardino di Sara, and Altre notti.

This recording project was created to celebrate the tenth anniversary of concerts by the John Hackett and Marco Lo Muscio Duo. As in their concerts, the pieces suggest a musical journey between ancient and modern music alternating between duo and solo compositions. The repertoire starts with music from the baroque era up to the present day with the duo's original compositions. Their musical journey includes music of contemporary classical composers and ventures into the world of progressive music. The album includes three exceptional guests who have made a difference in the history of modern music: John's brother. Steve Hackett, the Genesis guitarist; David Jackson, the Van Der Graaf Generator saxophonist; David Cross, the King Crimson electric violinist.
