Life's Magic stands as a terrific document of Steve Kuhn's artistic prowess as composer, stylist and interpreter. The powerful group that he led for this session was second to none and provided a performance that will be enjoyed for generations to come. The pianist recruited the rhythm tandem Ron Carter and Al Foster to accompany him on a program featuring four originals and three inspired renditions of jazz standards, including Stanley Adams and Hoagy Carmichael's "Little Old Lady," Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" and Mysels/Robertson/Cogane's gem "Yesterday's Gardenias." the new CD edition includes two previously unreleased tracks, Raymond Evans/Jay Livingstone's "Never Let Me Go" and Hammerstein/Romberg's "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise."

Although he is originally from Great Britain, he has spent most of his life in the northeastern part of the United States. Born in London on February 23, 1975, Escoffery was only 11 when he left the U.K. with his mother and moved to New Haven, CT in 1986. That year, he joined the New Haven Trinity Boys Choir, and it was also in 1986 that he began studying the tenor sax with saxophone/clarinetist Malcolm Dickinson. Escoffery was still in his teens when he met the famous alto saxophonist Jackie McLean, who Escoffery has described as a mentor and a major inspiration in his life; Escoffery studied with McLean extensively at the Hartt School, a performing arts school in West Hartford. After that, he attended the New England Conservatory in Boston and graduated from that institution with a Masters in 1999 before moving to New York City the following year at the age of 25.

Sunnyside Records is proud to present a wonderful document and a true testament to the extraordinary talents of the great Sal Mosca, a live recording spanning two discs entitled The Talk of the Town, taken from a performance on November 14, 1992 at the highly regarded Bimhuis in Amsterdam. Originally from Mount Vernon, New York, Mosca grew up near the jazz capital of the world, New York City. It wasn't until after graduating from New York University, which he was able to attend with help from the G.I. Bill, that Mosca's passion for jazz became all-consuming thus allowing his most famous musical association to begin, as he became a prot�g� of the legendary pianist Lennie Tristano.
