The first attempt went awry. When Nat and his older brother Julian 'Cannonball' Adderley tried to start a quintet in the mid-fifties, hardly anyone was interested in the newcomers from Florida. And that, in retrospect, was good. Because the trumpeter Nat landed in this way in the bands of Jay Jay Johnson and George Shearing, and there refined, under expert guidance, his art of elegant blues-bopping ensemble playing. The alto saxophonist Cannonball in turn became Miles Davis' counterpart to tenor saxophonist John Coltrane for a good four years, a time he later described as the most artistically important of his life. When the brothers came together again in 1959, they had both matured and were ready to lead one of the most successful jazz bands of the 1960s. Unlike experimental colleagues who tested the limits of music, but more and more lost their audience, the Cannonball Adderley Quintet managed to reach a large audience with hits like "This Here", "Work Song", "Jive Samba" and above all "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy". No wonder, then, that a wave of applause greeted the Cannonball Adderley Quintet in the Liederhalle Stuttgart in 1969. Completed by bassist Victor Gaskin and drummer Roy McCurdy, they had brought with them just the right repertoire.

Teresa Berganza is undoubtedly one of the greatest Spanish singers of the 20th century. She enchanted the audiences in the opera houses around the world. She was also an excellent singer with a wide repertoire of songs, even though she has become famous primarily through her operatic roles. Throughout her career, she would give recitals of song - especially the songs of her homeland. This is also reflected in the current program, recorded at the Schwetzingen Festival Songs of 1985. Her versatility as a singer can be heard in a full range of repertoire - German, Russian, French, Portuguese - and finally, with Ernesto Halffter a Spaniard. Teresa Berganza's voice spreads before the listener a rich palette of colors and emotions, always classy and bright.

A new treasure from the archives of the Southwest German Radio! Hänssler Classic is proud to present a rare historical recording of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra with Lorin Maazel from 1958. Lorin Maazel is one of the most famous conductors in the world. Born in 1930, he received early lessons on the piano and violin at the age of seven and soon thereafter began to conduct. His program includes Beethoven's often neglected Second Symphony, which has always been in the shadow of it's "bigger brothers", especially the "Eroica" Symphony. Also included is the Coriolan Overture and Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra". It is an extraordinary experience to hear how Maazel builds the suspense and consistency in these interpretations from early in his career. One of Oscar Pettiford’s big fans was Joachim-Ernst Berendt, the jazz editor of the Südwestfunk Baden-Baden, who went straight to work organizing various studio appointments and band members for the American guest, who had decided after an All Star tour of Europe in 1958, to settle in the Old World.

In changing sessions, local talents such as the trumpeter Dusko Goykovich, the clarinetist Rolf Kühn, and the drummer Hartwig Bartz, but also established colleagues such as the saxophonist Hans Koller and the guitarist Attila Zoller, each took his place in the queue. Sometimes American colleagues such as drummer Kenny Clarke or saxophonist Lucky Thompson joined the team and formed exquisite combos that discreetly courted Pettiford. He for his part thanked them on his instrument with eloquent and inspired noblesse.

Thus, over a period of almost two years after 1958, a good dozen recordings were made, consisting mainly of standards, but also of Pettiford hits such as “Blues in the Closet”, all of which document a master of the voluminous, bebop swinging groove bass, who was silenced only by his premature death in Copenhagen on 8 September 8, 1960, as the result of a traffic accident. Oscar Pettiford thus remains a charismatic figure in the background of jazz history, whose art is always worth rediscovering.

Hans Werner Henze’s choral works are not central to his oeuvre, but are in many respects fundamentally reflective of his artistic philosophy. Like all his other music, his choral works were meant to be true to real life and clearly understood by an audience. This was a fundamental diference between Henze and other composers who were active after the Second World War. While he did indeed use the same compositional techniques as his colleagues- dodecaphony, serial composition, neo-classical tonal colors- he always considered traditional forms of expression. The three choral works on this album date from 1947, 1963, and 1978. Even here, the music reflects traditional elements of western music. In recording these pieces, the SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgrt and the Ensemble Modern again make a key contribution to the music of an important German composer, alongside representative works by other composers such as Charles Ives, Elliott Carter, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and many more that have already been recorded by this first-class choir.

This extensive release is the second installment of a ten-volume tribute to conductor Michael Gielen. Some of Michael Gielen’s very first broadcast recordings made in the 1960s were of Bruckner’s symphonies. The development of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg is visible in these recordings, from the very earliest recording all the way to the incredible 2013 performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9. All of Bruckner’s symphonies are included on this release. Four of these performances have never been previously released.

The two extended visits in London, in 1791 and 1794, were the greatest triumph in the career of Joseph Haydn. By that time he had already composed 92 symphonies, 12 more came into being while he was in London. The English were stunned by his new masterpieces, which Haydn directed personally. They knew that they were in the presence of the greatest composer in the world. Mozart was already dead and Beethoven not yet known. In September 2009 during the Europäisches Musikfest the SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart and Sir Roger Norrington celebrated the memory of Joseph Haydn by performing and recording live all 12 London symphonies. They focused – with regards on orchestra size, seating, tempo, phrasing, articulation and sound – on historical performing style, their aim being to render the majesty, the folk-like simplicity, the infectious sense of dance, the surprises, and the humor characteristic to the Father of the symphony.

This release is the 10th in a unique collection of popular German songs, performed by Fritz Wunderlich, this album focusing on recordings from the 1950's and 60's. It is well known that Wunderlich was an exceptional singer, yet it never fails to surprise when hearing him singing works from different genres and discovering how he developed from his early performances to later in his career. This album focuses on the recordings which began his career and the sames repertoire which he later returned to with a more mature sound and approach. Both this release and all future volumes contain recordings that Wunderlich made for the company from which SWR grew. They are only available here.

Christmas, more than any other holiday, is deeply rooted in a nation’s culture. This is why Christmas carols from different cultures sound so vastly different from one another. This collection of songs includes music all the way from the Middle Ages to the present day. Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols is a notable track on this release, and is built on folk carols and considered by many to be one of the best Christmas cantatas. One of the world’s best choirs, the SWR Vokalensemble, performs these works.

Gulda's “Symphony in G“, presented on this album, was discovered in the SWR archive in the course of research for the release of all the recordings the Austrian pianist made for the German Southwest Broadcasting Corporation (SWR). Until now nobody actually knew that this work existed for there are no indications of Gulda being commissioned or of a specific occasion for which he might have composed this symphony. Therefore, one listens here to the world première of a piece which – apart from being recorded in the studio on 20 November 1970 – has never been performed in public. At the beginning of the 1970s Gulda gave concerts that exclusively featured his own compositions. This also applies to his performance at the Heidelberger Jazztage in 1971, released here for the first time digitally and on album. Almost all of Gulda's jazz works, though often based on classical forms, cannot be played without knowledge of improvisation so as to “keep them away from bunglers” (as the pianist himself put it). One of Gulda’s few compositions without improvisation to be heard here is No. IV from the ten-part piano cycle “Play Piano Play”. “Prelude and Fugue" was probably Gulda’s favourite work and was the last piece of Gulda’s performance in Heidelberg. An exception on this album is Fritz Pauer's "Etude.” In 1966 Fritz Pauer won a prize in the jazz competition Gulda had initiated and so Gulda decided to include this work in the Heidelberg concert from 1971.

The great soprano Martina Arroyo enjoyed on an unparalleled career on the international stages of opera houses that lasted from the 1960s to the 1980s. Coming from a mixed African-American and Puerto Rican background, she was one of the early singers in the opera world to cross the racial line. Her youthful, dramatic soprano made her an ideal Verdi and Puccini heroine but she could also draw upon the lyrical mezzo qualities of her voice to beautifully interpret intimate songs. In this Schwetzingen Festival recital she was at the height of her vocal abilities.

This release features key works by Astor Piazzolla, the king of composed tango, performed by three outstanding musicians. Shifting between fiery and melancholic, the tango nuevo is just irresistible. Born in 1971 in Münster, Germany, Friedemann Eichhorn studied violin with Prof. Valery Gradow in Mannheim, Alberto Lysy at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland and with Margaret Pardee at the Juilliard School New York. He regularly performs with orchestras such as St. Petersburg Philharmonic or the SWR-Radio-Orchestra and has concertized with Yuri Bashmet, Saschko Gawriloff, Gidon Kremer, Yehudi Menuhin and Igor Oistrakh. The German cellist Julius Berger studied at the Musikhochschule of Munich, Germany under Walter Reichardt and Fritz Kiskalt. Later, he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria under Antonio Janigro and at the University of Cincinnati under Zara Nelsova. When he was just 28 years old he was appointed to the Musikhochschule Wuerzburg and was one of the youngest Professors in Germany. A native of Buenos Aires, José Gallardo started piano lessons at the age of five, at first at the Conservatory in Buenos Aires, later continuing his studies with Poldi Mildner in the Faculty of Music at the University of Mainz, where he completed his diploma in 1997. Since autumn 2008 he has been teaching at the Leopold Mozart Centre at the University of Augsburg.
