Erika Haase completes her etude cycle with a view onto Johannes Brahms, who is less well known as a composer of etudes. The Paganini Variations are placed alongside etudes based on works by Bach, Chopin, Schubert, and Weber.

The Tacet label has approached the leading Welte expert to set up the original sound production mechanism and has recorded the results in excellent modern stereo on a series of CDs now numbering a dozen. This LP fits in seamlessly with an entire series of releases that have come from TACET over the years. TACET has thought up quite a number of novel tones and signals in order to systematically test the qwuality of an LP system. Anton Bruckner would have been 200 years old in 2024. Instead of using flowery but ultimately helpless advertising slogans to promote the 100th release for the Bruckner Year, we are trying to encourage people to think about production processes in classical music with a special release. What is a recording actually about?

The modern man seems to have more in common with his middle age ancestors than might be welcome to him. But don't look at this only negatively. There was more than pest and cholera at that time. Volume 3 of the already famous TACET Mare Balticum series pays homage to fairy-tale Wizlav von Rügen. Following his songs the emotional life of that time must have been very similar to ours today. What witty linguistic ideas he was inspired to by love! The project Mare Balticum aims to present the medieval musical heritage of the Baltic Sea region in the 12th-15th centuries. It consists of four musical programmes, prepared in great detail, and employing the newest musicological, philological, historical and organological research. Each of these programmes presents the local character of a different coastal region of Balticum, its specific historical and cultural situation, its most important saints and rulers, and the Christian roots of the relevant country.

The clarinet player uses his instrument as billiard cue. This little provocation on the cover indicates what is going on. It's common knowledge that Mozart composed these pieces not long before his death. But for Dirk Altmann (and booklet author Katharina Eickhoff) they are not the creations of an angel on the way to heaven but were written in a very earthly environment a part of which was playing billiards with his friend and clarinet player Anton Stadler. Russian pianist Evgeni Koroliov studied at the Moscow Conservatory, and since 1978 has been a teacher at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theater Hamburg. He is mainly known for his performances of the keyboard repertoire of J.S. Bach, as well as the music of Haydn, Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, and Schumann.

Gaede's Kreisler recording, on the other hand, is enchanting. The thirty-year-old violinist plays with a spirit we thought had died out. His playing technique is lit with a rare turn-of-the-century charm. He implores and pleads, he whistles, his chords sparkle, his frantic pace makes the violin laugh with merriment. Long live the tube! This newest release in the "transistor-free" series by Tacet is another musical jewel. The music that Tonmeister Andreas Spreer with his nostalgic, exquisite recording technique, using nothing but tube microphones and tube amplifiers, has conjured onto the disc boasts a naturalness, warmth and vividness we thought had disappeared forever and had almost forgotten. Here a violin still sounds like a violin.
