It is not uncommon to find discographic compilations in which one composer is at the centre of the selection of works. However, the fact that this edition focuses not on one composer but on a specific work in three different recordings is remarkable - and justifiable. At the centre is the studio recording of the 'Christvesper des Dresdner Kreuzchores' RMWV 7 from the Lukaskirche in Dresden (better suited for recordings than the Kreuzkirche) from 1993 under the direction of Gothart Stier. It is accompanied by the Eterna recording from 1964, also made in St Luke's Church, in which excerpts from the Christmas Vespers are heard under the direction of the composer and Kreuzkantor Rudolf Mauersberger. What is striking about this disc, which was very popular in the GDR, is the altered order of the individual pieces compared to the complete original work. The only audio and video document recorded in the Kreuzkirche is the MDR television recording from 2003, which gives an impression of the annual performances of the work in the designated church.

SOL is the first solo work by the Luxembourg percussionist, composer and vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher. Already in his childhood, he chose the vibraphone as an exotic and fascinating instrument, as it's shiny plates and step-shaped tubes sound metallic and, at the same time, soft and ethereal when struck with a mallet. A trance-like state is created in the listener, whom Schumacher skillfully abducts from everyday life through filigree played original compositions and covers by Chilly Gonzales, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jarvis Cocker, and Mike Oldfield. SOL is a unique sound spectacle.

A secret society, a clandestine community, mythical rituals in dark temples. The image of the Freemasons is surrounded by the mystic mists of the unknown. When it comes to their music, one should by no means think of Hans Zimmer's epochmaking soundtracks to the Hollywood movies based on Dan Brown's novels! Vocal Concert Dresden has turned to the authentic music of Freemasonry. The exclusivity and selfimposed isolation of the movement fed the legend of the "Royal Art" that grew up about the fascinating mysteries of the Freemasons. What really took place in the inner confines of their temple remained hidden from view. The development of their mythical, symbolic use of formulae, objects and rituals went hand in hand with a cultivation of specific music. This album offers a whole programme of music that covers both overt and subliminal examples of musical pointers to the lodge brethren's symbols and values: threefold repetition for example will symbolise the three ranks of St John Masonry and the three ideals (wisdom, strength and beauty); pounding note repeats represent the masons' hammer blows, while the alternation between soloist and tutti represents the teacher-apprentice relationship between the individual ranks. Schiller's "Ode to Joy" won favour in more than 100 different settings and gained immortal status as the culmination of Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The widespread view that it was commissioned as an original poem for the masons is simply untrue. Long before Beethoven took possession of the poem, a number of composers in Leipzig and Dresden had set the words to music. Four of those first settings laid the foundations for it's popularity and they are featured here on this album. Accompanied by a comprehensive booklet, this release by Vocal Concert Dresden under the direction of Peter Kopp aims to demonstrate the importance of music, not only to the freemason movement. Masonic music-making made a huge contribution to the development of middle-class and non-sacred music. Recorded in Dresden's "Institute of Freemasonry", a school building sponsored for more than 150 years by the movement, this album featuring numerous works never recorded until now offers a truly fascinating view into a world seldom seen or heard.

If we assume that the concept for Arash Safaian's album uberBach - which won the ECHO Klassik Award 2017 in the "Classical Music without Borders" category - was to compose music in which you could feel Bach without Bach being "there", then the release of Mondholz: Remixes & Canons is the continuation of this concept. It contains two original tracks as well as two remixes by renowned electronic producer Hendrik Weber aka Pantha Du Prince - who smilingly claims that he was born with music in his cradle, as his parents played music all the time, even before he was born - in which Weber applies "the rules of Pantha Du Prince" to Safaian's music. Safaian says: "For me, the poetry of this album is that the universal architecture of the canon is united with the principle of dance." The two artists see this as a dream pairing: "I simply felt that he had the same feelings towards Bach," Safaian explains about Weber. "For me, Black Noise is one of the best electronic albums ever; I hear an encrypted polyphony in his music, the origin of which comes from nature. No one else came into question for the collaboration on my album." The result is a flawless combination of Bach's revolutionary style with Safaian's extraordinary reinterpretation of the original work - performed by Sebastian Knauer, Pascal Schumacher (vibraphone) and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra - rounded off by the electronic compositional artistry of Pantha Du Prince.

The enormous popularity enjoyed by the works of Jose de Nebra, the leading Spanish composer in the mid-18th century, is a cause for surprise. His manuscripts are scattered across archives throughout Spain and the Americas. Jose de Nebra rose to be one of the organists of the Spanish Royal Chapel in 1724 and it's vicemaestro from 1751. Following the 1750 prohibition of performing villancicos in the royal institution, Nebra composed a complete series of Christmas Day responsories for the Matins service. From among the different versions, La Grande Chapelle offers the full version from 1752, which is unquestionably one of the indispensable works of Spanish Baroque music. The performance of this collection, following the study and transcription of the musical sources still in existence, represents a premiere of great musicological and artistic interest.

Until recently, Bronsart von Schellendorf's career as a composer has been almost completely overlooked. But Liszt was aware of Bronsart's prowess, referring to his orchestral work Fruhlings-Fantasie as "beautiful and invaluable" and later declaring, "I value him as a character and a musician." Even a cursory listen to the Piano Concerto reveals a composer working in ambitious dimensions and an extrovert musical language. Rich in melodic and emotional content, Bronsart's piano writing gives ample opportunity for virtuoso display while delivering Bronsart's musical arguments with power and precision. Bronsart's good friend Hans von Bulow, another pupil of Liszt, had toured the work from 1870 onwards. He took the concerto abroad, giving a concert in Manchester under the baton of Charles Halle in 1877, by which time the work had secured a temporary foothold in the repertory.

When Goteborg Jazz Orchestra (GJO) - and the founders Mats Eklund and Johnny Olsson - laid out plans for the band's Monday night concerts for 2021 they came up with the concert series "Swedish Jazz Heroes", playing the music and telling the story of the role models who have shaped Swedish jazz of today. They came across the trombonist Eje Thelin and his last work, the suite Raggruppamento. The suite was firts performed and recorded live by the Radiojazz gruppen (RJG) in 1989 in the presence of Eje, but since he himself was too ill, he chose to let guitarist Goran Klinghagen play his feature parts and solos.
