This disc has been kicking around for a while, but the music is so delightful that I thought I’d mention it in case you missed it the first time. It consists of orchestral arrangements, mostly (it seems) original to Herbert and his circle, of most of Babes in Toyland and a “selection” from The Red Mill. Herbert was not just a master orchestrator but also was a first class tunesmith, and hearing this music is like meeting up with an old friend. Babes in Toyland actually begins with a full-blown symphonic poem, a prelude in pantomime form lasting some 15 minutes, so there really is substance here as well. The performances are lively and well-played, the sound more than acceptable. You may be very pleasantly surprised at the musical quality and sophistication on offer here.
