Enja presents the final recording of American jazz legend, pianist and songwriter Bob Dorough. BUT FOR NOW, recorded in 2014, is an intimate trio session with Dorough on piano and vocals, saxophonist Michael Hornstein and bassist Tony Marino. With tunes taken from the great American songbook, Dorough shows his lifelong talent of making any tune his own with his unique style and unforgettable southern drawl. The last recording of the man behind the music of the long-running Schoolhouse Rock television show.

The album BUT FOR NOW, recorded by  Bob at the age of 91 in the Fall of 2014, marks the final recording of a true American original, who passed away in April of this year. Born in Arkansas in 1923, he started his career as pianist for the legendary singing boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. He played with Charlie Parker, recorded two songs with Miles Davis and cut numerous albums on various labels.  But his biggest claim to fame was on TV as the musical director of the hit tv show for kids, “Schoolhouse Rock.” He had a bit of a renaissance in the late 1990’s recording 3 CDs for Blue Note Records and subsequently on smaller labels.

On  BUT FOR NOW he plays standards like “Girl From Ipanema“, “Georgia“ and “Take Five“ and gives them an original fresh take. The intimate trio, without drums, enhances the authentic feel of the recording from the legendary Red Rock Studio in Pennsylvania. The songs were recorded strictly live - no overdubbing Bob and the sax player Michael Hornstein, have been friends for years. Their closeness is evident in every song. Hornstein is featured on two instrumentals, “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “Harlem Nocturne“. Bassist Tony Marino has worked with Bob numerous times and adds the necessary unerring instinct to the trio on this beguiling, charming and swinging recording. A fitting final tribute for one of America’s best loved jazz troubadours.
