Gregory Spears‘ Requiem was commissioned for Christopher Williams’ dance/opera piece Hen’s Teeth, incorporating a vast array of imagery from fairy tales to ancient France. Likewise, the music crosses boundaries between times and genres: written for baroque instruments and voices but using Breton texts and modern harmony, the album-length work comes together into a layered and erudite but rewarding listen.
