VERDI Arias from Aida. Il trovatore. Giovanna d’Arco. Un ballo in maschera. Luisa Miller. La traviata. Don Carlo. La forza del destino. Otello Krassimira Stoyanova (sop); Pavel Baleff, cond; Munich RO ORFEO 885141 (74:12 Text and Translation)

Krassimira Stoyanova has one of the most beautiful soprano voices today, allied with a musical intelligence and dramatic instinct that few of her colleagues can match. It is difficult to believe that a late starter (33 in 1995) can sing some of the most difficult arias with no tricks to simplify her task. Earlier recordings have indicated her versatility (see my review of a previous recital in May 2009), and we are not disappointed. My sole quibble is that Orfeo did not see fit to engage the necessary comprimario singers for some of the excerpts as they did in the earlier CD. And it would have been even more instructive to have had the entire scena from Luisa Miller rather than the jolly excerpt. Otherwise, we can revel in coloratura executed with ease, piano high notes, messa di voce , but all within the framework of the aria and never just to show off. As on the earlier CD, most of the arias come from works the soprano has already sung in the opera house, so she is not simply reciting but living the music. If you doubt my enthusiasm, listen to the “Ave Maria” from Otello , the great aria from Don Carlo or the simple recitative and aria from Giovanna d’Arco and you should be convinced. While individual renditions of these arias may be surpassed by other sopranos, it is difficult to find many other singers who could match Stoyanova’s accomplishments.
