Philippe Gaubert was born in Cahors in 1879. He was a son of a craftsman who played clarinet as an amateur. When Gaubert was very young he began taking flute lessons with one of the most famous French flautists of time: PaulTaffanel. His studies were rapid and very impressive, to the point that before he was twenty, he became the first flute of the Orchestra Concerts du Conservatoire. Philippe Gaubert was an open-minded man, so he did not limit himself to the flute but studied orchestral conducting and refined composition as well. In 1920 he was chosen as OpradiuParis' musical director andlater onhe began teaching flute at the EcoleNormalede la Musique. In 1930 he left the Conservatory professorship to Marcel Moyse (1889 - 1984) and began a position as professor of orchestral conducting in the same institution. He died in Paris 10 June 1941. Goubert's legacy includes three wonderfulSonanatasfor flute and piano (A major, C major and G major) which are all very important parts of the flute repertoire. FrancescaPagniniand JakubTchorzewskigive us a performance rich in shades of interpretation and vitality. The rareSonatineends the album with just two movements of poetry and delicacy.
