An alter ego (second or different self) is both a close companion to the individual as well as an additional personality. David Orlowsky and David Bergmueller are companions, however, they could hardly be more different. They hail from different musical traditions and the combination of these two instruments have no historical references. When David Orlowsky first discovered a video of David Bergmueller on the internet, he was not aware that he had encountered his musical alter ego. The two met in Berlin and mutually agreed to make music together after just a few shared notes. They became companions, which then became a duo, the duo ultimately becoming an organism. Within this organism, David and David function as opposing and complementary personalities. Together they embark on a journey into unexplored worlds of sound. The clarinet is the voice of bygone times while the lute joins to create polyrhythmic structures allowing both new and old times to flow together in their original compositions.

Christa Ludwig mezzo-soprano Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus Otto Klemperer conductor STEREO � RECORDED IN 1962 & 1964 By the time he made these celebrated recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra in the early 1960s, Otto Klemperer was a grand old man of conducting. Christa Ludwig, by contrast, was in the glowing early prime of her extraordinary career, which encompassed repertoire for both mezzo-soprano and soprano. "Klemperer was marvellous for the singing," she later said, "because he did nothing against the composer." This collection shows the fruits of their collaboration in Beethoven, Wagner, Brahms and Mahler.

TCHAIKOVSKY: THE SLEEPING BEAUTY

Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Maria Callas did not make complete studio recordings of Donizetti's Anna Bolena and Bellini's Il pirata (these two operas are both available in the new Callas Live Edition), though, as the queen of La Scala, she enjoyed triumphs in both roles in 1957-1958. The vocally and dramatically demanding final scenes of both operas feature in this recital with Oph�lie's mad scene from Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet, another coloratura extravaganza. When this recital first appeared in 1959, Gramophone wrote: 'This is a most remarkable record, not only for it's material... but for it's astonishing vividness and dramatic poetry... It has been a thing of much wonder for me.'

WAGNER: DER FLIEGENDE HOLLANDER

The members of the Alban Berg Quartett learned and refined their art at the very heart of the Viennese musical tradition. They have recorded twice Beethoven's Complete String Quartets, the first time in studio from 1978 to 1983 at the Evangelische Kirche in Seon (Switzerland), and the second time at concerts in June 1989, at the Mozart-Saal of the Konzerthaus in Vienna (Austria). This second version is offered for the very first time in a vinyl clamshell box and as a limited edition. In these transcendent live performances, the ABQ rise to the challenge of the complex and ambitious works that stand at the summit of the chamber repertoire. To their trademark Polish, finesse and intellectual penetration, the ABQ adds, where appropriate, a wildness and dangerous energy that is both exciting and characteristically Beethovenian.

The distinctive character of each of Prokofiev's Violin Concertos seems rooted in it's genesis: the first, nervy and iconoclastic, coincided with the Russian Revolution; the second, more sober and expansively lyrical, dates from 1935, when Prokofiev was preparing a permanent return to his native country. The two concertos were written nineteen years apart - a period that coincides almost completely with the years Prokofiev spent "in exile", first in the US and then in France. He composed No. 1 shortly before leaving Russia, and No. 2 just months before his return to the Soviet Union. It is hardly surprising, therefore, that the two works are so different from one another. Perlman chose to record these two concertos with Gennady Rozhdestvensky, whose experience in this repertoire he no doubt deemed second to none.

JB Dunckel is a French musician best known for being an ex-member of the popular music duo Air, a group which sold more than 4 million albums worldwide. AIR was nominated twice at the Brit Awards, once as Best international Band and once for Best soundtrack for The Virgin Suicides.
