STRAVINSKY / BELLI PIANO DUO RITE OF SPRING (ARRANGED FOR TWO PIANOS) In his second CD release with WERGO, Enrico Belli once more juxtaposes the American composer George Crumb with music from one of the predecessors who has influenced him most profoundly. Given that Makrokosmos IV" was both conceived and written for piano duet, it makes sense to place it in the context of Igor Stravinsky's version for piano duet of his composition "Le Sacre du printemps". The Belli Piano Duo's interweaving of works by Igor Stravinsky and George Crumb - most important and virtuoso works for piano four hands - opens entirely new horizons of perception. The results are "Mythical Dances", indeed.

The lute style can also be highly personal, as is demonstrated by the great technical virtuosity and unsurpassed intuitive talent of Muhamed El Amin, who influenced an entire generation of young musicians. Born in 1943 in the city of Oued Maddani, he began to learn the lute at the age of eleven. At twenty he composed his first songs and experimented with traditional Eastern maquamat. In Muhamed El Amin's work the style of the "great songs", the "al-agani al kabira" is especially evident. His arrangements are not simply melodic potpourris but through-composed works.

Rodion Shchedrin's “Carmen Suite” is well-known in the world of theater und of the opera. Its popularity is altogether unique in the history of modern music – but only a small part of his multifaceted oeuvre notable for its unmistakably Russian character and, at the same time, its international aura. A brilliant pianist and organist, Shchedrin has appeared throughout the entire world as a successful performer of his own works.
“I am very glad that WERGO releases recordings of my music from past years. The company Melodiya who had recorded them made brilliant recordings of classical and contemporary music at that time … Today, they are almost history, but it may be all the more interesting to listen to them after such a long time in comparison to those difficult and turbulent years.” (Rodion Shchedrin)The composer remembers his recording of the "Polyphonic Notebook": "Whenever the piano in the recording studio sounds good, it plays better, as though somehow unfettered. We stopped for a break only at midnight. There was strong tea in the thermos flask. We decided to go on, rather than to postpone the rest of the recording to the following day. By three in the morning Veprintsev had had enough. He could take no more and left. I continued with Yelena Buneyeva. Nothing came between us and success – the piano sounded quite magical that night ..."

As late as the 1960s the cheerfully elated rhythms of mento would be found at every village festival. In the age of modern and Afro-American pop music, however, the most important and oldest folk tradition of Jamaica - which developed from the displaced Africans' contact with European music - has fallen increasingly into the shadows. With violin, banjo, guitar, and rumba box this famous Jamaican group presents a piquant potpourri of mentos, folk tunes, religious songs, and American hits. The songs are not infrequently lewd, and they treat daily life with humor and satire.

"The Metamorphoses of Dionysus", Mikis Theodorakis’s first opera,
from 1985 — it was followed in 1990 by "Medea", in 1993 by "Elektra", in 1996 by "Antigone", and in 2001 by "Lysistrata" — is based on a free variation and an individual reading of Greek history. It is at once a parable of the excesses and suggestive effects of power, but also of the relationship between art and politics.
It centers around the suicide of the civil servant and poet Kostas Karyotakis, whose poems Theodorakis set for the opera. The libretto, by Theodorakis himself, incorporates various texts by Karyotakis and two fragments from the poem "The Good People" by Kostas Varnalis (1884–1974).
The opera begins and ends with the suicide of the poet Kostas Karyotakis, whose poems are presented as arias in the opera, running through the entire work. They are framed with texts by Theodorakis, producing a collage of verses of poetry and his own texts, of melodic and grotesque passages, that becomes the opera’s essential structuring feature: the contrast between the arias, the set “tragic” poems by Karyotakis, and the musical farces, the music to Theodorakis’s “sarcastic” texts.

The relationship between Hans Werner Henze and Oliver Knussen was one of great mutual respect. The German composer admired the British conductor and composer for electrifying performances of Henze's own and other composers' works. Knussen was an untiring and enthusiastic champion of his friend Henze's music. The recordings collected here display Knussen's deep understanding of Henze's music. Knussen conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in sensitive and meticulous performances of compositions ranging from the composer's middle period to his last completed work. Los Caprichos transforms the bitterness and sarcasm in Francisco Goya's famous series of etchings into a tender and melancholy "Fantasia per orchestra" that makes only sparing use of contemporary stylistic devices. The large orchestral work Heliogabalus Imperator - a programmatic depiction of the life and death of the notorious Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus - also provides evidence of Henze's self-assured and idiosyncratic interpretation of modern music idioms. The Englische Liebeslieder for solo violoncello and orchestra express a wide range of emotional states, which are brought to life by cellist Anssi Karttunen.

The composer wrote the libretto for his opera "Antigone" himself. In it, he not only refers to Sophocles’ "Antigone", but also to other classical material such as "Oedipus At Colonus" by the same tragedian, Aeschylus’ "Seven Against Thebes" and "The Phonician Women" by Eurpipides.
Short summary:
In a pantomimic prologue, Oedipus’ son Eteocles seizes the throne and the royal insignia while his brother Polynices is out of the country. In the first scene, Oedipus leaves the city with his daughter Antigone, though not without criticizing the Thebans’ policy of self-betraying submission. In the second scene, Eteocles appears, in preparation for battle against his brother who has besieged Thebes. Jocasta, mother of both, desperately attempts to pacify the brothers and allay her worst fears. Her efforts fail, the brothers kill each other, and Jocasta commits suicide. In the next scene, Creon accedes to the throne whilst Antigone mourns deeply. Creon orders a state funeral for Eteocles. Polynices, however, is to be left unburied, exposed to animals and decomposition. Whosoever ignores this order risks the death penalty. When Antigone breaks the law and attempts to bury her brother, she is arrested and condemned according to Creon’s inhumane orders. Haemon, who is Creon’s son and engaged to Antigone, tries in vain to change his father’s mind. In the final scene, the couple sing to love "invincible in battle", united in death.

Giacinto Scelsi never saw himself as a traditional composer. In his later creative period he would sit at the piano, record his improvisations and then let others transcribe then. Scelsi's world view was grounded in the Eastern mysticism. His spiritual orientation is expressed in the subtitles of the piano suites performed here by Sabine Liebner. Suite No.9 "Ttai" is titled after the 11th symbol from the I Ching which signifies peace. Suite No.10 "Ka" is titled after a Sanskrit word that refers to something unnameable and unspeakable.

I have always dreamed that my music would be heard in the places where unhappy people are gathered - in hospitals, prisons, overcrowded trams and buses... consoling and questioning. - Peteris Vasks. Peteris Vasks' main mission is a panegyric of love. There are characteristic symbols in Vasks' music: birdsongs associated with ultimate freedom; elements of Latvian folk music as reminders of Latvian identity; toccata-like passages expressing an evil and brutal force, and aleatoric episodes picturing the scenes full of despair and chaos. Besides the all-embracing humanism, the destiny and history of Vasks' homeland Latvia have always been present in his music. Born in 1946 at Aizpute, a town situated in Western Latvia, Vasks has spent most of his life under the regime of Soviet occupation, witnessing both the suppression of the Latvian language and deliberate russification of the Latvian nation. Deeply felt pain of his oppressed nation, it's endangered identity and the portrayal of totalitarianism at it's most brutal became the dramatic vein of Vasks' music. The present recording of the String Quartets Nos. 1, 3 and 4 complete the string quartet oeuvre of Peteris Vasks already recorded. All string quartets were released on the occasion of the Latvian composer's 70th birthday. Each of the five string quartets was composed at a different time, but they all cover almost thirty years of his creative experience and clearly illustrate the basic principles of Vasks' musical language.

From Heaven to Hell" The music of the angels as a euphonious affair is a relatively recent notion. In the Old Testament, the polyphonic praise of God was imagined as an overpowering roar. Martin Smolka's "Rush (Hour in Celestial Streets)" comes closer to this older concept with it's after-work traffic jam, though he also takes a detour through microtonality to write entirely new harmonies. On earth, light music celebrates a joyous resurrection in a very special "music machine" in Mauricio Kagel's "Orchestrion-Straat". And with his "Racconto dall'Inferno" (tale from hell"), Louis Andriessen sides both with and against Dante, submitting evidence that hell does have a sound-and that anyone caught in it's repetitive loops will find it difficult to escape. "We're on the highway to hell.

Fumet, D.: Canticum Novum / Les Chariots D'Israel / Le Conci

When I was young, I heard Fumet just once play the organ. It was one of the most stunning emotional experiences in my life. I was struck, blown away as if by a maelstrom, emptied of all personal substance; however, I felt instead, with intense delight, a stream of fire shooting across me. Anyone who has heard Fumet perform has experienced a similar sensation. (Bernard Gavoty) Not a very well-known composer today, the great organist and improviser Dynam-Victor Fumet left an important number of works: numerous symphonies, four masses, various motets and melodies, works for the piano as well as for the organ. Although a contemporary of Vierne, Tournemire or Dupr, he does not imitate any of them. Having studied with Franck, he has composed pieces with very formal structures and perpetual modulation. He developed a very personal harmonic style, and his rhythmic and melodic language has a certain subtlety that distinguishes him from the main trends witnessed before and after the war. Nowhere does one find the usual glittery scherzos, flute solos, or those dramatic crescendos that make one's head spin. Displaying an extreme degree of intimacy, it is first and foremost music that speaks to the soul. At the young age of 19, Frdric Denis was appointed the titular organist of the great A. Cavaill-Coll organ of Notre-Dame-de-la-Croix in Paris. Since this time he has given numerous concerts in France as well as abroad, performing as a soloist or with an orchestra, and has taken part in several renowned international festivals and recordings.

Feldman: Patterns in a Chromatic Field / Mayr, Anissegos

Morton Feldman's Patterns in a Chromatic Field is a major composition, not only in modern American music but in 20th-century music per se. The composer plays with the musical memory of his recipients and thus creates timeless spheres: In minimally varying patterns, the listener experiences a trance-like avant-garde event in which past, present and future cancel each other out. Patterns in a Chromatic Field is based on the principle of differentiation and repetition. The composition functions like a still life, using the color variations of Middle Eastern rugs as a basis: Even a pattern that appears to repeat itself exactly is actually slightly different in its iterations because of slight changes in hue. In his piece for piano and violoncello, Morton Feldman now creates a large-scale auditive pattern whose sound aesthetics from the layers of notes is no less than a transformative and meditative experience of music. With Antonis Anissegos on the piano and Mathis Mayr, this recording unites two performers who not only are excellent instrumental players but also feel at home in electronic music – a fact that is of benefit to their version of Morton Feldman’s minimalist soaring tonal architecture. Anissegos and Mayr create a detailed and intimate sound quality which can be regarded as referential in its antithesis of the ‘dramatic’.

With this CD, Walter Tilgner presents some of the master singers of the bird world - Skylark, Nightingale, Thrush Nightingale, Song Thrush, Blackbird and Golden Oriole. Which of them has the loveliest song is a question which can probably never be answered satisfactorily. The exul-tant and joyful song of many birds will surely continue to inspire and stimulate humans to listen to the sounds of nature and composers, po-ets and artists will be inspired to incorporate these natural sounds into their works. "German naturalist Tilgner uses advanced computer software to capture the songs of the skylark, nightingale, blackbird and golden oriole, among others, with breathtaking clarity." (The Wire)
