On October 2 1958, after over 60 years of colonial rule, Guineans voted overwhelmingly for their independence, and Guinea was declared a Republic with Skou Tour as President. To free Guinea from it's colonial legacy, president Tour sought to restore dignity to his nation and give cause for Guineans to take pride in their culture, history and newfound freedom. To achieve this, he instructed his government to implement new cultural policies to revitalise indigenous culture. In 1961, President Tour launched authenticit, the new cultural policy for Guinea. One of it's first acts was to assemble the best Guinean musicians into a new state-sponsored orchestras that were tasked with presenting traditional Guinean music in a new and modern style. During the years of Skou Tour's presidency (1958 - 1984), the government's cultural policy of authenticit was applied strictly to the creative arts. Guinea's sole political party exercised complete authority over artistic production. From 1967 to 1983, Guinea's government presented selections of songs on it's own recording label, Syliphone. These recordings were revolutionary in many aspects: Syliphone was the first recording label to feature traditional African instruments and the traditional songs of the griots within an orchestre setting; and it was the first government-sponsored recording label of post-colonial Africa. Syliphone represented authenticit in action, and over 750 songs were released by the recording label on vinyl discs. All are highly sought after by collectors worldwide. This is the second of a two-volume release which presents a selection of the best songs from Guinea's Syliphone recording label. This volume focuses on recordings from the 1970s, when Guinea's authenticit policy had transformed the nation's music through a network of over 30 orchestras, each representing their local region, and each presenting Guinean musical traditions alongside the influences of Cuban music, jazz and funk.

With Jim Higgins (percussion), Steve Cooney (bass), and Graham Henderson (keyboards). Recorded by Manus Lunny at Seafront Studio in County Donegal, Ireland. Recorded during an almost 24-hour marathon first-day session for All My Relations, "Mitote" emerged from group improvisation and composition, featuring Sunny Jain (Red Baraat) on the dhol. Bosco and the band worked up an arrangement quickly with a heavy backbeat, building the melody on a blues form-embodying the world's nature of ecstasy and struggle. "Dilo" was recorded during the Ancestros Futuros sessions, but was left off the album. The rhythmic framework was composed by Brian Wolfe and arranged by the band. The song features call and response between the percussion and saxophone punctuated by high bell patterns and low bottom drum hits.

Tinariwen evolve once again on their brand new album, connecting with a younger generation of Tuareg musicians to produce a vibrant album of undulating grooves rooted in their nomadic community. Also featuring guest appearances from Jos Gonzlez & Sulafa Elyas. Fierce advocates for their people's nomadic culture that exists in the desert borderlands between Mali and Algeria, Tinariwen's bluesy, guitar-driven music has found global acclaim over the past two decades for it's lively blend of Tamasheq-language politicism, syncopated rhythms and soaring melody. While previous records like 2023's Amatssou saw the group collaborate with Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson producer Daniel Lanois, on Hoggar the band look closer to home, and stake their claim as elders of this Tuareg musical tradition. Going back to their early years of songwriting with acoustic guitars and communal singing around the desert campfire, while also passing the torch onto a younger generation of featured musicians who can continue to keep the flame of rebellion and defiance alive.

This collaboration between Davor Bozic and Lee transforms the hypnotic rhythm of the Hand Pan into a cinematic roadmap for the soul. Originally intended as a solo instrumental project, it "morphed" into something far more powerful: a vibrational key to higher consciousness. From the opening notes of "The Wings of a Sound," you are transported beyond the noise of the world to a place where love is the only frequency. Each melody acts as a gentle guide toward higher consciousness, whispering the eternal truth that "All Be Well Within." As the final notes of "Doors" fade, you are left with a profound sense of renewal-reminded that every ending is simply the threshold of a new beginning.

Who was Antoine Dougb? Even the most dedicated crate-digger might go their whole life without stumbling across any of the three LPs he released in the late 1970s and early '80s. Yet all the musicians who happened to cross paths with him remember with a mixture of admiration and fear; for Antoine Dougb was not merely one of the most inventive songwriters to emerge from the fertile music scene of Cotonou, but also a powerful Vodn initiate whose close connection to the spirit world allowed him to refer to himself as "the Devil's prime minister." In Cotonou, a city that had established itself as one of the centres of the West African music scene, the young man found himself drawn to Cuban son and rumba. But his fascination with the traditional rhythms of Benin-especially those associated with Vodn ceremonies-allowed Dougb to take his music in directions far removed from anything happening in the Congo. Dougb neither sang nor performed any of the main instrumental parts of his songs. It has been suggested that his involvement with Vodn-in which singing plays a crucial role in important rituals-effectively prohibited him from using his voice for anything as frivolous as a popular song. Whether driven by the thrill of the music or by fear of crossing the Devil's prime minister, Dougb's records all feature Orchestre Poly-Rythmo playing at the absolute height of their considerable powers. Dougb released three LPs and a handful of singles under his own name, but never quite found the audience he deserved. By the early eighties he had vanished from the music scene. Analog Africa now brings his small but extraordinary body of work to a wider audience with a double LP compilation featuring 12 songs, a whirlwind of circular guitars, synths, mesmerising layers of Afro-Cuban and Cavacha madness.
