The meeting of East and West that has always characterized Georgian culture is especially strong factor in the rich variety of musical styles that range from Eastern-sounding monophony to the traditional polyphony of church music and rural popular music. The three ensembles recorded here - Soinari, Mzetamze, and Mtiebi - give broad perspective on the landscape of Georgian culture today, with a program of traditional and contemporary works that includes popular songs and music from films. The Chopi are one of Mozambique's smaller ethnic populations. Their music for large xylophone ensembles, however, can be considered one of the most spectacular and complex forms of artistic expression on the African continent. Venancio Mbande is one of the last authentic representatives of this tradition. His compositions follow in the long history of mgodo, the ceremonial music for the elders and council members, the so-called chiefs of the Chopi.

The Cistercian Abbey Thoronet, the dark sister of Senanque, is sought out only by bats and other experts in echoes. Michael Vetter was inspired here to create two Songs of the Night: freely improvised liturgies, accompanied by tamboura, with expressive melodic development and several overtone passages to which the bats, crickets, etc., respond.
