This album of Arnold Cooke’s Symphonies 4 and 5 were originally broadcast on the BBC in 1975 and 1981, respectively. Arnold Cooke said of his compositional style, “My music is mainly based on traditional procedures and principles… I do not have any particular theories of composition, just a natural inclination for it.” Cooke tended to steer away from passing compositional fads, staying true to his ‘style.’ Meirion Bowen said of this recording of Symphony No. 4, “the format is entirely that of the traditional four-movement symphony- crystal clear to follow, perfectly proportioned in the best academic traditions.” The works are performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
