French violinist, composer, teacher, and publisher Henri Marteau (1874-1934) began as a child prodigy who was praised by such composers as Brahms, Gounod, and Massenet. His critical peer Carl Flesch once said of Marteau, “At the turn of the century he was justifiably considered one of the finest violinists of his time.” in 1908, Marteau took over the position of leading violin teacher at the Berlin College of Music. Unfortunately he was arrested at the beginning of WWI for being a French citizen, and was stripped of his position and not reinstated post-war. He never regained the success that he had found before the war. Here, several outstanding instrumentalists explore three of Marteau’s works, two of which are receiving here their world premiere recording.
