The first published works of Francesco Manfredini (1684-1762) appeared in the early 18th c., with the Sinfonie da chiesa being published as his Op. 2 in 1709. Of the twelve pieces in the collection, seven are in major keys and five in minor. Although appearing connected in some ways, the key sequence of the collection is inconsistent. Changing meter signatures and varying performance instructions offer further means for achieving musical variety. The young musicians of the Capricornus Consort, Basel are well-equipped with sound knowledge of baroque performance practice.
