The first Carus CD by the Berlin Radio Choir offers two large choral works with unusual instrumentation. Instead of the large, opulent orchestras required for both Charles Gounod’s Requiem in C and Antonín Dvořák’s Mass in D, these works appear on this recording in skillfully arranged versions for smaller ensembles: in the Gounod Requiem the Berlin Radio Choir under Risto Joost is accompanied only by organ, while the Dvořák Mass acquires special tonal color through its wind quintet accompaniment.
