Mozart Lieder Evenings from Salzburg with Irmgard Seefried, Ingeborg Hallstein, Peter Schreier, Helen Donath, Walter Berry, Edith Mathis and Edita Gruberova.
"This release, appearing as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations marking the composer's birth, constitutes a kind of musical stocktaking of Mozart's lieder as performed at the Salzburg Festival.`Mozart's lieder play a relatively modest role in the repertory...in spite of all this, we should not underestimate Mozart's importance in terms of the development of the art song as a genre...
During the last five decades, only eight singers have included any of Mozart's songs in their Salzburg Festival recitals, and of these only four made these songs central to their programmes. In consequence, our own programme lasts a total of barely 140 minutes...but the result none the less offers listeners a delightful oppportunity to make comparisons in terms of style, execution and individual interpretation.
