2017 marks the 450th anniversary of Claudio Monteverdi, one of the fathers of modern music, who gave a major impulse to expressivity and individuality of expression. Rinaldo Alessandrini's benchmark recordings of the madrigals, the Vespers, L'Orfeo, etc., contributed to unanimously establish the Roman conductor and his ensemble Concerto Italiano as the leading ambassadors of Monteverdi today. Notte. Storie di amanti e guerrieri is a selection of highlights from Monteverdi's most famous madrigals and instrumental movements: Lamento della ninfa, Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Ho'r che'l ciel e la terra, sinfonias from Monteverdi's three operas etc. A heart-stretching program in which Rinaldo Alessandrini's science of light, emotions and colros is at its highest.

REVIEW:

This release presents selections from Monteverdi's eight books of Madrigals, including the dramatic cantata Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, as well as excerpts from Scherzi Musicali and the operas La favola d’Orfeo and Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria. Alessandrini and his musicians give their performances a feeling of spontaneity and freedom, and the liveliness of the singing emphasizes the theatricality that was essential to Monteverdi’s secular works. Naïve’s reproduction is conventional stereo, though the warmth, depth, and vibrancy of the sound is close to audiophile quality, and the performers have remarkable presence in the digital recording.
