The 12 Caprices, op. 25 represent one of the most significant works by cellist and composer Carlo Alfredo Piatti (1822–1901). The 12 Caprices merge the great virtuosity and flair of the musician with the desire to restore the singing qualities of the Italian opera aria. Aram Khachaturian’s Sonata-Fantasia for cello solo dates from 1974; its title and structure reflect a Lisztian influence. Consisting of one movement of great breadth, this piece manifests a notable variety of expressions and timbres, suggested also by the indications of the composer. Two rarely recorded works.
