The third release in the Kristjan Järvi Sound Project, Parallel Tones takes two iconic works both united by New York. Richard Strauss's Sinfonia Domestica - debuted at Carnegie Hall and featuring four saxophones in what was the composer's idea of the 'American sound' - and Duke Ellington's A Tone Parallel to Harlem (Harlem Suite), a big band piece very much inspired by Strauss's tone poems. • These two 'parallel tones' - one going from Europe to America and one from America back in time to Europe – morph 19th c. European musical language with that of the American 20th c., crossing paths in New York. • The brief disc closer, Præludium for Jazz Band (1936-37), was Igor Stravinsky’s first on-the-spot creative response to American music. It was written after he followed Milhaud to the jazz clubs of Harlem and heard the music played by black musicians in Chicago and New Orleans.
