These recordings from the Teldec catalogue of the incomparable Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter, who rarely made studio recordings and who was awkward enough about live recordings, are a true treasure. The first disc includes the two concertos that Bach himself originally conceived for the violin, followed by Richter's first ever recording of Mozart's Piano Concerto in C major, K503, recorded live, in which Richter embraces the work's expansive gestures in the way only he can. CD2 is a real rarity; Mozart piano works given an extra piano part by Edveard Grieg as an aid to teaching the piano. Richter is joined by Elisabeth Leonskaya playing the added part. In the Schumann Piano Quintet Richter plays with perhaps the greatest, and certainly the longest lasting, string quartet - the incomparable Borodin String Quartet.
