La traviata is one of Verdi’s most popular and most performed operas, and is based on the play La dame aux Camelias by Alexanndre Dumas. This particular recording, made in 1959, has not been available for many years, despite the historical importance of the lead roles. Victoria De Los Angeles portrays Violetta, and Alfredo is played by Carlo Del Monte who is proud and incisive, contrasting the typical lyric tenors that usually play the role.

Review of a past CD issue of this recording:

The main reason for owning this set is the remarkable Violetta of Victoria de los Angeles. Always a voice of almost unbearable beauty and expressiveness, as Violetta there’s always sadness present. Even at forced “happy” moments, such as the first act party scene, de los Angeles lets us know that Violetta is “the lost one”, and that furthermore, she herself knows it. The tear in her voice is irresistibly moving. Mario Sereni offers a fine elder Germont. The leadership is what you would expect from Tullio Serafin – knowing, empathetic, and truly Verdian. Love de los Angeles? Buy this.
