Hermann Wolfgang von Waltershausen’s (1882-1954) opera Oberst Chabert (1912) experienced a modicum of success in the brief period after its premiere and before the onset of WWI, but for that reason and others fell out of favor, as did the composer himself more generally. One of only two recordings of this pleasingly melodic and well-orchestrated work in the CD marketplace, and certainly the more historic, its fine cast features the likes of Otto Weiner, Julius Patzak and Ms. Gertraud Hopf. Charles Adler conducts the Lower Austrian Tonkünstlerorchester.
